UK'S GEORGE GALLOWAY REFUTES NEW OIL SCANDAL CLAIMS Mon Oct 24 2005 19:52:44 ET
George Galloway has strongly refuted new allegations that he pocketed money from Saddam Hussein's scandal ridden oil-for-food programme and lied about it under oath.
The US Senate committee investigating the Respect MP's alleged involvement in the saga claims to have discovered £85,000 (150,000 dollars) in Iraqi oil money in his wife's bank account.
Mr Galloway may face criminal charges if found to have given false testimony to the committee when he defended himself against similar claims in a passionate showdown earlier this year.
The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has accused him of giving "false and misleading testimony" at the May 17 hearing.
Mr Galloway, who used the headline-grabbing appearance as the basis for a new book, denied being an oil trader, soliciting oil allocations or instructing anyone to do so on his behalf.
But Republican Senator Norm Coleman, who chairs the committee, claims to have obtained new evidence proving that Saddam's regime granted oil allocations to the Bethnal Green and Bow MP and his Mariam Appeal fund.
The committee's new report accuses Mr Galloway of personally soliciting and being granted eight oil allocations totalling 23 million barrels from the Hussein government between 1999 and 2003.
It claims that his estranged wife, Dr Amineh Abu-Zayyad, received approximately £85,000 (150,000 dollars) in connection with one allocation of oil.
Developing...
I found it puzzling that Coleman has remained silent ever since Galloway was here and basically told Norm to take a hike.
Now we know that Norm was keeping a tight lip for good reasons.
I'm almost a Norm fan, again.....
Isnt Galloway the cat that came here about a year ago and left grinning like a skunk eating crap because he embarrassed the investigators? Maybe he isnt grinning so widely now.

HMMMMM. That in itself sounds suspicious to me.
Well finally here's some good news amidst all the hurricanes, Plame Blame, Scotus controvesy, etc.
It was hard, at first, for many Germans to take Austrian-accented Hitler seriously.
It was hard for the French to take Corisican-accented Napoleon seriously.
It was probably hard for Russians to take Georgian-accented Stalin seriously.
Beware of cute-speaking foreigners who want to run your country.

EBEN HARRELL Key points Key quote Story in full GEORGE Galloway could be facing a lengthy prison sentence in the United States after a Senate committee last night claimed it had fresh evidence his political organisation and his wife had received nearly £340,000 in oil-for-food allocations from Saddam Hussein and then lied under oath about the deal. The committee said it had the "smoking gun" that proved the anti-war activist received UN allocations from Saddam, a charge the Respect Party MP vehemently denied under oath in May. Senator Norm Coleman, the chairman of an investigative subcommittee, said he will send the evidence to US Department of Justice and to British authorities. Mr Galloway could now face charges in America of perjury, making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding. Each charge carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and a £140,000 fine. Mr Coleman said he had obtained evidence that Mr Galloway's political organisation and his wife received the money from illegal oil allocations. "We have what we call the smoking gun," the senator said of the findings in the 60-page report. "Galloway was anything but straight with the committee; he was anything but straight with the American people. You heard a lot of bombast." A spokesman for Mr Galloway, Ron McKay, said the anti-war activist denied the accusations and, if charged with perjury, would be willing to appear in an American court. "Put up or shut up," Mr McKay said of Mr Galloway's accusers, calling the report derogatory and defamatory. Earlier, Mr Galloway released a statement saying that although he had not seen the report, which he called "a sneak revenge attack of the most contemptible kind," he continued to defend himself against allegations of impropriety. "I have not made a penny out of oil deals with Iraq or indeed any other kind of deal," Mr Galloway said. "This ought to be dead, yet Norm Coleman parrots it once more, from 3,000 miles away and protected by privilege." During a May hearing, Mr Galloway blasted Mr Coleman's subcommittee as "the mother of all smoke screens," denying accusations that he profited from the oil-for-food programme and accusing lawmakers of unfairly tarnishing his name. Mr Coleman, a harsh critic of the United Nations, said his panel's evidence shows that Mr Galloway personally solicited and was granted oil allocations totalling 23 million barrels from 1999 through 2003. Those allocations could be sold for a profit. The report also alleges that Mr Galloway's friend, Jordanian businessman Fawaz Zureikat, funnelled money from the oil-for-food programme to Mr Galloway's wife, Amineh Abu-Zayyad, and to the Mariam Appeal, a political organisation that Mr Galloway established in 1998. Coleman said his investigators confirmed their evidence, which includes numerous bank records, in interviews with the former Iraqi deputy prime minister Tariq Aziz, a friend of Mr Galloway's. |
True!
bttt
Galloway denied the charges. He said he didn't do it. But he did nothing to knock the facts down that were presented against him. He "refuted" nothing.

Any idea how much chance there is of extraditing him?
To the U.S. or Iraq? ;)
Tariq supposedly will testify against Saddam as well as Georgie-boy.
Popcorn time!
Galloway is more than a traitor, he is a foolish and arrogant liar-traitor. He may find that his own country will use the new revelations against him, and he may find that he must get out of Dodgingham, and escape to friendlier shores... like Tehran or.. Havana, or Berkeley. Stay away from Iraq, where they are trying that other monster Saddam, Galloway, or you may well meet a Gallows on your way.
It's really too bad this guy hasn't been thrown in jail already.
But the oil-for-food scam has too much evidence backing it for Galloway to be able to walk away from this one. If one thing gets prosecutors going, it's hard evidence.
See ya' in 10 years.
Is extradition arranged yet?
Illiteracy or mendacity, FReep this poll!
I think Galloway does what comes naturally to him. He feels he can get away with it because of his adulation by the Left.
