A 23-year-old Druze girl has been murdered by family members for dating a Muslim, police suspect

Police suspect that a young woman from Shfaram whose body was found Sunday in the Galilee was killed for ‘the sake of saving family honor’, when it became apparent to family members that she is dating a Muslim man.

Samar Hassoun’s body was found in an olive orchard lying between two Arab villages in the Galilee. Owners of the orchard who arrived to their fields Sunday afternoon spotted the body of the slain 23-year-old and called the police.

Officers could not at first determine the circumstances of the death but forensic evidence confirmed that the girl was murdered.

Ynet has learned that over the last months the young Druze girl had been dating a Muslim, resident of a nearby village.

She had run away from home several times in the past. Police have arrested two of the girl’s uncles, one from each side of her parents, and her Muslim boyfriend.

Chief Superintendent Shmouel Boker said the suspects have so far denied involvement in the killing. The Akko Magistrates’ Court on Monday extended the remand of the uncles by eight days and that of the boyfriend by seven days.

The investigation is in its initial stages and the police do not intend to make further arrests at this point in time, superintendent Boker said.

Founded in the early 11th century, the Druze faith is based largely on the dogma of Hamzah ibn Ali ibn Ahmad, a minister of the Fatimid Caliph al-Hakim. Based initially of the doctrines of Shi'a Islam, the Druze believe that, through Hakim, God made a final appeal to humanity to redeem themselves before He returned to rule. The Druze are found primarily in Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Jordan.

Actually, they were Christian from the Phalange Party who carried out those massacres, in theory taking revenge for the assassination of Bashir Gemayel (who was actually assassinated by another Christian faction -- do some searches on Elie Hobeika if you want more details). The Phalange is not the Druze. Oddly enough, the Phalange party, which worked fairly closely with Israel during this period, was originally inspired by the Fascist parties of Europe and, in particular, the Nazis.

I don't believe this story, but I would if it was the other way around. I suspect it's a plant to make muslims the victim, a common tactic. She was probably raped and murdered by a muslim, and of course the muslim "police" turn it into something else.

I think the thing to remember is that honor killings aren't so much a religious thing as a tribal thing that predates Islam. Islam certainly doesn't help matters, but a lot of what goes on in the Middle East isn't specified in the Koran. It's the same with the way they treat their women, keeping them in seclusion and the like--it's cultural and tribal, not religious and was being done long before Mohammed came on the scene.

And before anyone says anything, I'm hardly a defender of Islam. I'm just saying that these people would be doing the same thing whatever their religion. Islam just organizes them.
