If you were vacationing in Mexico, and heard a hurricane was coming.....wouldn't it make sense to leave????

Some folks got sandbagged by premature flight cancellations. But I'm sure others were too stupid to leave - but you don't know which category this guy falls into.

Jeb concerned about low evac from Keys, says reporters standing out in storm are a bad example (a cute sound bite), 2.5M w/o power, should be cut in half relatively quickly, then half again ... better understanding of damage by tomorrow, pressing utilities to give good estimates so people can plan "angry citizens are bad for Governors" ... FDLE has not yet confirmed that death ... Katrina had 12 deaths because people did not stay in their homes, hit by trees, CO poisioning, falling off roofs .. he really wants us to stay put. Planning was for a cat 2, amount of time to prep for W will make response better. TS force winds to exit Keys and SW within the hour, off east coast this afternoon. (paraphrasing)

When the storm approaches the winds increase steadily. AAfter the eye passes over, you go from calm to hurricane force winds almost instantly. I sure wouldn't want +100 mph winds slamming into my house that quickly. I can see where the damage would be worse from that.

Some were arriving on the last planes that got there before cancellations.

But many were caught because flights were canceled.

Jeb supporting decisions made by local governments ... giving info is the key for people accepting decisions, lessons learned ... conference ends.

That Jeb wants to exit politics is his right but is a damned shame. Noblesse Oblige, Jeb.

Jeb's response is due to the fact the his brother is the President and FL got special attention, and because W learned his lesson after Katrina.

< /nasty sarcasm which will probably come from the Rats.

That was my thought as well. I'm thinking some folks were stuck on stupid.

Didn't have to ACTUALLY help, perception, always perception. And, of course, with the Rats perception is reality especially since among them, it actually is.

Here in Vero Beach, 10:34 a.m. The wind is really really whipping out there. Raining, too. (It reminds me of NY in the winter when the snow is blowing sideways and you look out the window and see it in the streetlight.) Still have power though, thank God. No flooding on my street as of yet which is great because last year my downstairs neighbors got flooded twice. This street was even on FOX news. If anyone remembers the picture of the brown truck that was flooded by the church, that's where I live. My front yard is covered in tree debris, but other than that, no major problems that I can see. I must say, it is a bit scary. It's supposed to be blowing over at a good clip so hopefully it won't last much longer.

Write if you want to be kept up to date.

What's the latest update from your mom in Stuart?

I'm fretting over my daughter's grandmother and uncle on North Hutchinson Island. They live in a high-rise tower which has become a close-knit community of neighbors, and those people choose not to evacuate. From what I've read, the authorities make it very difficult to re-enter the island once you leave.

I still don't know why they stay, though. It was either during Frances or Jeanne that their picture windows broke and the living room furniture got sucked right through them. Too scary for me!
