Category Three Major Hurricane Wilma is barreling toward the Southwest Florida coastline. The storm is packing wind speeds of 125mph, moving NW at 20mph, with an enormous eye 65 miles in diameter. Landfall is anticipated shortly in Collier County between 6:00 and 7:00AM ET.

Storm surge flooding of 9 feet to 17 feet is possible along the coast near and to the south of where Wilma makes landfall. Storm surge of 5 to 8 feet is predicted for the Keys. The storm has spawned tornados throughout the Florida peninsula since yesterday evening.

Last yr. if you went in on the city website where you live, there was a list of designated fire stations which gave out bug spray, tarps, and ice. I am not sure about this yr. but it was all through FEMA and you had to get there early or long lines.

We have winter storm watches up from Tues afternoon through Wed. evening. Bad news if we get snow, cause it's usually heavy and wet in these conditions and the trees are late losing their leaves. Could be bad news for trees and powerlines.

Well, that sounds like a plan :-)

If you can't find someone to run by there I can possibly do it this weekend. It's a haul from Orlando and if I could get off of work I could do it sooner. But that doesn't look likely.

Thanks. I know this pales in comparison to the devestation that happens in hurricanes but it does have it's own set of problems. There are usually downed trees and power outages and people dying also from storm related problems. The thing that makes it bad up here is the cold.

We're south of Syracuse but higher up in elevation. We just moved here last year from sl. further north so I don't really know what to expect from this. When we lived in Fulton, we would get the nor'easter and as it pulled off the coast, the next day we'd get pounded by lake-effect snow. Here, I don't know if we're high enough that we'll get snow or rain. We're typically 3-4 degrees cooler that Syracuse. We have a generator though. You can't take the chance with power outages in this area. They generally only happen in the winter.

That would be nice. Even if it went more out to sea, that would help. The path of these storms is critical. A slight shift in direction east or west makes a HUGE difference in whether we get snow or rain and how much and how far inland. The closer to the coast, the worse it is. Anyone have any idea about how this storm might affect England, if at all?

Just heard from my mother-in-law in Deerfield Beach FL (between West Palm Beach and Ft Lauderdale) Power's been out since 11am or so. I told her the official read was that it was a cat 2 when it passed her. I'm sorry if I implied that something that I'm not sure about will happen. I don't want to start any unfounded rumors. It's just that these storms generally tend to head off in that direction and I don't have a clue as to how long they last or how far they go. The tracking maps don't go that far. We never hear about where the remnants end up. It's just that this storm is so big and strong and unpredictable that I was just wondering. After seeing a TS hit Portugal this year, I'd think anything is possible. Can any of the FReepers from the British Isles fill us in on this?

Anybody seen pictures out of Miami yet? Every time I switch to CNN they are showing the storm's effect on Cuba, nada on Miami. MSNBC, HNN are on trials, same for Greta (hey, since the Scientology compounds roof didn't leak, life goes on, eh?)

(1) I didn't want top honors here. I was afraid of this because of Wilma's approach path, and its effects off the Bay, ugg. My property is on the west side directly facing the Bay/Miami. I haven't been able to get a hold of anyone to check out my home. Probably going to take a day or two. Coast Guard will have a detailed area sweep video tomorrow. See what it shows. Not going to worry about it, life's too short as it is. Beside, I've got more important things to worry about, like seeing the Houston Astro's play Tues/Wed night, lol. (Basic mental diversion)

(2) Very Extensive Damage in the Florida Keys. Key West International Airport, the city's only airport, suffered severe damage, with at least five feet of storm surge near the entrance and as many as three feet of water on the runway. A building that housed Cape Air was destroyed, according to airport director Peter Horton. The airport's tower was damaged, as were 100 cars in the airport's parking lot. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy said the runway at Naval Air Station Key West's Boca Chica facility is under water and workers are assessing the damage. Storm surge severed U.S. 1 around Mile Markers 31, 73 and 110. Dave McGinnis, meteorologist with the National Hurricane Center in Key West said, it's probably the strongest storm to hit this island in 50 years Wilma's eye passed only 20 miles north of Key West through the Dry Tortugas. Wind gauges there recorded sustained winds of 125 mph and gusts up to 134 mph at 1:45 a.m. Then the gauge broke.
