Hurricane Wilma Live Thread, Part III (TS Alpha gets honorable mention too)
NHC - NOAA ^ | 22 October 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 10/22/2005 1:25:10 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Wilma slowly drifts toward the Southeast Gulf of Mexico after relentlessly pounding Cozumel and Cancun for more than 24 hours. Early reports indicate extensive wind and flood damage to Mexico's resort-studded Mayan Riviera. Mexican officials said about 20,000 tourists were at shelters and hotels on the mainland south of Cancun and an estimated 10,000-12,000 were in Cancun itself. About 50 hotels were evacuated.

In preparation for Hurricane Wilma's anticipated Florida landfall, a Hurricane Watch and mandatory evacuation have been issued for the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. Mandatory evacuations for Marco Island and much of Naples are in effect, as well as high surf advisories and high risk of rip currents along Florida's panhandle and Big Bend coasts. Bus services are available for Monroe Co. and other counties for residents who do not have transportation. Additional storm watches for the Florida peninsula are expected later today.

The 2005 hurricane season altered the record books again today with the formation of Tropical Storm Alpha south of Hispanola. Preliminary forecasts indicate TS Alpha will not affect the U.S. mainland.

Since I am 35 miles Northwest of The town of Okeechobee this does not give me good feelings.

Thank you very much for your support. I really appreciate it, particularly when Wilma is going to be a little too close for comfort around here.

I knew we had folks living in the vicinity of Okeechobee. Thanks for checking in. I'm getting ready to spray for bugs around the house perimiter. Just found a long line of ants entering the garage for shelter.

I'm following the thread closely, although I don't post much. I'm part of the Oklahoma Southern Baptist Disaster Relief team and will be watching for activation.

Just got a report via phone from Merida. Their EMS can't get through to Cancun. Just east of Chichenitza is a creek and it is 5-6 feet deep (about 70 miles from Cancun). It is near a town called Chemax.

Even the Mexican Army can't get through.

Although there was hard rain in Merida and Chichitza there are no reported fatalities except chickens. Get this, the electricity is still on in those areas. They were watching Notre Dame football and NASCAR Bush racingl.

This is indeed great news. But we have little to no reports from Cancun and the Hotel Zone.

Motion over the last hour 11 minutes is to the northeast (55 degrees) at 3.3 mph. That puts Wilma just over 6 miles from the Gulf on that course, 9 miles from the Gulf going due north, and 23 miles north-northwest (328 degrees) of Cancun.

A rather exhaustive set of satellite pics/loops here (Wilma is Floater 1).

(Riding it out in Key Largo)

Good luck.

Beginning the turn...?

Possible. Could also be a wobble (speed is significantly less than the comparison over the previous 2 VDMs). The next eye fix should tell us more.

New Smyrna Beach on the East Coast. Nothing yet, just high cirrus clouds. (They also mentioned them as harbingers in "Isaac's Storm".)

Can you believe, the town of Mayapon played Labna today in soccer. Simi finals for a championship and they were not going to cancel this game for anywthing. I have no clue who won.

Between us all, when I talk with my friend down there who is a stewart on a bus tour, I understand why they are called a 3rd world country. Their priorities are not what we normally know. None the less, he has been my friend for 30 years and I will share this comment with him. Whenever I can get there or on the phone.
