Jonah bails entirely on Harriet...
THIS IS WHERE I GET OFF [Jonah Goldberg ]
My official position on Miers has been to criticize the selection, but give her the benefit of the doubt until the hearings. In other words, bad pick but she's the nominee so let's give her a shot.
No more.
After reading this story I'm officially against Miers. I'm with the Editors , Will, Frum, and Krauthammer.
It's not just that Miers was in favor of racial quotas -- we'd pretty much known that for a while. It's the fundamental confirmation that she's a go-along-with-the-crowd establishmentarian. The White House says that her enthusiastic support for goals, timetables and quotas at the Bar Association says nothing about her views on government race policies. Yeah, right. She simultaneously thought what she was doing was great and important while also believing it would be unconstitutional if the government did the same thing.
The White House says she's an unchanging rock of principle. Uh huh. So have her opinions held constant since the early 1990s? Or have they shifted with the wind? If she's a rock, I don't want her. If she's a weather vane, I don't want her.
I just don't want her.
Start over.

"The agenda item's title: "Implementation of Fire Department Affirmative Action Plan"."
Thanks. But Calpernia still won't admit it. He'll say that, in this case, "Affirmative Action Plan" just means "fairness to all of us because we're all really equal anyway...except that the unskilled, unschooled, uneducated and unremarkable are even more equal."
isnt it amazing how these people have become like liberals with this type of relativism, oh it wasn't REALLY a quota?
You don't have to take the Washington Post's word on this. Her position on racial and sexual diversity and affirmative action is right there, extensively, in her own writings, which I posted here about a week ago.
For the first time in the last ten or twelve years the MSM doesn't have to lie about President Bush or his appointees to make trouble for him. All they have to do is report the truth. Bush has given it to them on a silver platter.

"There are none so blind as those who refuse to see"
I was thinking that same thing as I was reading some of these responses defending miers.
If this was a clinton appointee, they'd be up in arms. But since miers was appointed by GWB, they'll make excuses for the same thing.
How many times, and in how many ways, do people in the GOP base have to be told? She's *NOT* a conservative. You're being *CONNED*, people.
If she were a conservative the ACLU, MoveOn, Kennedy, Biden, Boxer, Screwmer, The Nation, NYT, ANSWER, NOW, NARAL, People for the American Way, NAACP, ABC, CBS, NBC, Jesse Jackoff, etc, ad nauseum, would be screaming bloody murder. And they aren't. She ain't conservative.
Ring another one up.
In the U.S.?...
Who would that be.?...
HARSH! That could be the last word for Conservatives on Harriet Miers
Good point! In fact, on blogs like Talk Left, Clintonista talking heads like Jeralyn Merritt have been giving her good marks. Miers is a "bipartisan ruling class" pick---not a "grassroots conservative" pick in the least.
When Bork told us this was a disaster, I believed him. Nice to know that Jonah has told his mom and all this rest of us that he is through 'giving her a chance at her hearing'.
He set the bar very high with the Roberts pick. That's what was so dumb-as-dirt STOOOO-pid about the "elitism" charge re: criticism of her qualifications---Roberts' qualifications had obviously made a difference in choosing and confirming him.
And if Miers is withdrawn---and if GW has any brains left, she will be---GW has already used up the good will and "political capital" slashing and brawling for this boner that he'd need for any other "crony" pick.
This is going to be not just one but a series of fiascos if the WH thinks otherwise---like Nixon with his Haynsworth and Carswell nominations over 30 years ago.
I guess it shouldn't make any real difference if she was or not, but still, it's just another example of the...the...well...LIES we've been told about this woman.
This is an example of how Bush has hurt the conservative cause more than any president in my lifetime - he has his unapologetic defenders embracing liberal ideas.
If Miers turns out to be the anti-Roe vote that could have been..Blame the NRO for thirty years down the drain!!
With friends like that, who needs enemies? Heralding Miers as a quota supporter is not being her "advocate". Get real!
Hitler loved puppies. I love puppies too. Therefore....?
