Fox News: Possible Miers Withdrawal? WH Reaching Out to Conservative Leaders for 'Plan B'
Fox & Friends Weekend

Posted on 10/22/2005 4:11:56 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Though not giving it much more than 'rumor' treatment, on Fox & Friends Weekend it was just reported that the White House is reaching out to GOP senators as to their recommendations for 'Plan B' in the event Miers is withdrawn.

One of the F&F hosts clarifed that according to the information Fox has received, it is not WH aides who are doing the outreach directly, but conservative surrogates.

The anti-Miers forces want her withdrawn because they are afraid that if she goes in front of the committee, she might be *gasp* good.

My biggest surprise is that she did not fit the mold that I thought the nominee would fit

I'm curious. Describe if you will, what you anticipated the pick mught be. Not by name, but the qualities that you expected to see in the nominee.

...but Bush seems to be very confident in her.

This might be a low blow, but Bush was also very confident in finding stockpiles of WMD's in Iraq.

Speaking for this member of the anti-Miers crowd, you could not be more mistaken. I believe her appearance would be at best mediocre, and more likely disastrous. But if for any reason the hearings proceeded and she revealed herself to be a highly articulate advocate of constitutionalism originalism, entirely conversant with constitutional law and principles, I'd be pleasantly surprised and happy to change my view of her.

But I think the odds of that are slim and none. Based on her writings that have been made public and the comments coming out of her meetings with senators, it seems clear that she lacks both the knowledge and the intellectual skills to pull off that kind of performance in the hearings.

Add Fox to the list of leftist individuals or organizations the bushbots need to attack. So now we have NRO, Fox, the Washington Times, Rush, Ann Coulter, Novak, Will, Krauthammer, Frum, and Bill Kristol. Down with those hateful sexist, elitist socalists!

A true conservative couldn't get through this senate.

It could if the GOP framed the argument properly. However, based on past performance (see 21 successful filibusters), I doubt the GOP is able to do so.

You need 60 votes to have a majority in the senate. We don't have those votes thus we are at the mercy of Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer.

A minority of Senators, all from a DEM obstructionist party, effectively has the power to limit the scope of viable candidates.

And the GOP doesn't frame the issue in that form. Nope. The defense is all about how good Harriet will on the issues, "trust me."

What if she was diagnosed with breast cancer on Nov 1? Or was in a serious car wreck this weekend?

The banality of this remark just takessss my breath away. Ah! The smell of the Republican base snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. What were you thinking?

Assuming, for the sake argument, that the Miers nomination is withdrawn, I hope he nominates Alberto Gonzales and very publicly reminds the Federalist Society that they are not president, he is.

What motivates you in that direction? Is Alberto Gonzales the best candidate for the job?

Memo to: Dubya

From: Agent Smith

Laura is a lovely lady, and it is time for you to stop hiding behind her skirt. Even if she talked to into the Miers nomination, YOU should take the hit and clean up the mess that YOU have created.

The Rats are really salivating in anticipation of her hearings. You have to know when to hold them, know when to fold them. You have a 7 & 2 off suit and the Rats are ready to go all in with aces.

It is time to get out, while you still can.

Then again... there could be a bastard of a 'Plan C'.

All depends which 'Bush' comes out of this self-made fiasco. The Real-Bush(the one who cut our taxes & stood up to terrorism) would nominate Rogers-Brown or Owen.

The Bizarro-Bush(who gave us the senior prescription-drug deal & refuses to close our borders) might toss up Gonzalez... or Consuelo Callahan.

Let's hope Dubya saves his temper for Democrats.

I can't wait to see what you say when this nomination doesn't go through. By the way, Miers has been tanking on Tradesports. Since you believe so much that this is going to go through, you should bet on her, you can make a lot of money at the current odds.

Uhhh...I like the GWB but he's a better fit for your definition of the elitist group.....Wealthy family, Ivy league school...grandfather Senator, father president...etc...

His public personna is one of a regular guy....

OTOH, Condeleeza Rice fit's the regular people group with exceptional talents and drive....

So they're reaching out to Senators? Isn't that how they got Meirs?

It was the DEM obstructionist minority and lilly-livered GOP leadership (Specter, Frist) who urged a pick that would not trigger DEM objection. COnservative Senators were left out of that process.

This article is spreading a rumor that some of the more Constitutionally traditionalist Senators are being approached for ideas.

Ah-hah! Thanks for the explanation. Well, I'd agree that conservatives would be cutting off their nose if the likely replacement for Miers would be someone worse. But I think that's extremely unlikely. If W withdraws Miers, it will be because he realizes he cannot afford to alienate his conservative base. So in all likelihood he would replace her with a proven originalist.

Plan B will really be suspect. With Plan A being Bushes best attempt for the future of this country, B will be suspect from the opening bell.

...were broadsided by Miers...

no one in their wildest bender would have thought that GWB would have put up a lightweight such as Miers.

Not with all the critical issues on the line such as prayer/mom.-of-silence, abortion, quotas, guantanamo, eminent domain.

Quite frankly, I still havent recovered from the depression I incurred the day she was nominated.

Excellent analogy. Taking it further- look at the damage Wilma is doing...while she just sits there.
