Fox News: Possible Miers Withdrawal? WH Reaching Out to Conservative Leaders for 'Plan B'

Though not giving it much more than 'rumor' treatment, on Fox & Friends Weekend it was just reported that the White House is reaching out to GOP senators as to their recommendations for 'Plan B' in the event Miers is withdrawn.

One of the F&F hosts clarifed that according to the information Fox has received, it is not WH aides who are doing the outreach directly, but conservative surrogates.

Nominees have been withdrawn before. Remember Douglas "Captain Toke" Ginsberg, who was Reagan's first nominee chosen after Bork's defeat?

My official position on Miers has been to criticize the selection, but give her the benefit of the doubt until the hearings. In other words, bad pick but she's the nominee so let's give her a shot.

I'm officially against Miers. I'm with the Editors , Will, Frum, and Krauthammer.

It's not just that Miers was in favor of racial quotas -- we'd pretty much known that for a while. It's the fundamental confirmation that she's a go-along-with-the-crowd establishmentarian. The White House says that her enthusiastic support for goals, timetables and quotas at the Bar Association says nothing about her views on government race policies. Yeah, right. She simultaneously thought what she was doing was great and important while also believing it would be unconstitutional if the government did the same thing.

The White House says she's an unchanging rock of principle. Uh huh. So have her opinions held constant since the early 1990s? Or have they shifted with the wind? If she's a rock, I don't want her. If she's a weather vane, I don't want her.

I just don't want her.

Yes and no. The article doesn't name the callee, but does name the caller:

When the next Rat President proposes such a candidate, with similar background, for SCOTUS, and merely gives you the same "assurances"....you'll be in the group screaming that Meals on Wheels, religious beliefs and "trusting him" that the candidate won't make laws from the bench, are IMPROPER qualifications for any Supreme Court Justice.

Who denied it. Not much of a source. I could call James Carville and say, "Do you support Bush?" He'd say no, and I could go public and say, "I spoke to Carville, and while he denies it, he told me . . . ."

She won't be withdrawn. I'm certain of that.

But say she is, there isn't going to BE another nominee---certainly not one more conservative than her. Hard-line right-wingers won't trust Bush, and will nit-pick every opinion (for ex., J. R. Brown could NOT pass the smell test on the WOT!!) Dems, meanwhile, would be so emboldened, they would oppose anyone.

Of course I cannot prove the calls went out, though I tend to believe they did. I am, however, virtually certain that, at the end of the day, by hook or by crook, Harriet Miers will not be a Supreme Court justice.

Just a mere tittle and jog from the conservative's "scouring of 'garbage cans,'": Miers supported affirmative action: paper. But, let's not have facts get in the way of conservatives' concerns over this Miers' nomination. It's feels so much better for the pro-Miers group to call the anti-Miers group closet rats or elitists.

Oh BTW, you do know that Ronald Reagan signed a pro-abortion bill as Gov. of California appx. 10 years before he became President. And Reagan is thought of as the scion of the pro-life movement although he never signed one anti-abortion bill, as President Bush has(the partial birth abortion ban).

Go ahead and be yet another IQ test adminstrator. The smartest person I know (he's considered a genius by other professional mathematicians) cannot write a word, even in his native language. Exactly. By the writing and speaking brush, we would have to conclude GW is a "moran". We all know that not to be true. Texas seems to have more than its share of Genius IQs without speaking and writing skills. It comes from our tradition of being a people of few words... we observe and think rather than run our heads simply to hear it rattle. What's the old saying? Better to look stupid and not say anything than open one's mouth and remove all doubt? We could do with a few more Texans around here.

Only a fool overlooks the fact that along with the document itself and the 25 ammendments you have 200 years of case law. If you dont understand the history, the case law, etc. you are left blowing in the wind by input you receive, desired or not, from the other eight justices and your own clerks. If you dont have a judicial philosophy and no knowledege of case law, you are ignorant and have no more right to be on the court than a lawyer has to perform heart surgery. According to NR's Byron York, things are going so badly for Harriet Miers in her Senate meetings, that her team might put an end to the practice altogether!

I'm wondering if they finally changed the emails for the daily talking points to promote Miers. Initially, the series of daily emails was titled "More On Miers".

It elicited some chuckles in certain quarters.

And where did I say you couldn't have that opinion?

I think his opinion is wrong and part of being with the DC right wing bubble(i.e a group mentality whose opinions are based on a near paranoic fear that they are going to be betrayed by a person(President Bush) who has not betrayed them on previous judicial appoitments).
