LONDON, Oct 21 (Reuters) - A parrot that died in quarantine in Britain has been diagnosed with bird flu, the country's agriculture ministry said on Friday.

And what does the suspect (the parrot, dumbie!) have to say?

Suriname? That makes me think this isn't H5N1.

Which is good.

"Suriname? That makes me think this isn't H5N1."

The below quote doesn't say anything about may be.

"A highly pathogenic H5 avian flu virus has been isolated in the parrot imported from Suriname, South America".

South America is the troubling part.

South America has occasional avian flu outbreaks, doesn't it? Never H5N1 before, but lesser strains, like the one that broke out in the Netherlands in... '02? '03?

I don't remember.

He's up on the roof with his boids. He keeps boids. Dirty... disgusting... filthy... lice-ridden boids. You used to be able to sit out on the stoop like a person. Not anymore! No, sir! Boids!... You get my drift?

I have already taken the bird houses down from my back porch. Just being cautious or overly cautious as some freeper is bound to say.

I'll be that FReeper! =P

Since it's not even that close to the US yet, it's still safe to feed and shelter wild birds. If it spreads to the US wild bird population (i.e. migratory birds), then you might take them down.

You're safe for the moment.

If you get bird flu, I can't be held responsible though.

Bird flu?

I'm just glad I'm a bloke.

If my bird gets the flu, I'll just send her to bed with a hot water bottle for a few days, that should do the trick.

H5 strain probably indigenous to SA. I have read about viral outbreaks with strains almost identical in different areas of the world occurring at the same time. Mother Nature is probably pissed.

The H5 is there, but not the N1.

Later maybe I'll have a chance to google and see if anyone os more specific.

Actually I took them down when the hurricanes had us in their direct line of sight, can't remember if it was for Katrina or Rita, and I have just been too lazy to hang them back up. Sparrows are the only birds that nest in them and I think we are well populated with sparrows without me giving them any help.

Sparrows and squirrels are the bane of my bird-feeding existence.
