The thought of Maggie, his beloved golden retriever, spending her days alone at home is almost more than H. Russell Potts can bear.
Maggie is not doing well with this, he said, wiping a tear from behind his glasses. Shes a very unhappy camper.
But these are heady times in Virginia politics, and if Potts is asking Virginia voters to sacrifice, then so must Maggie.
The state senator from Winchester is on a quest to become the first i ndependent elected as Virginia governor. He knows its a long shot. And his message doesnt ease the odds.
Potts wants to raise taxes. He believes its the only way Virginia can improve transportation. He says his front-running opponents Democrat Timothy M. Kaine and Republican Jerry W. Kilgore have been immoral for promising major new programs and tax cuts.

To others, he's an unprincipled old-line Republican who'll ruin the GOP's chances of recapturing the office of Governor.
I live far from Virginia - though I have travelled extensively thru most part of it.
Regardless of whether you like Potts or not, this is a good article.
So...Virginia Freepers (and anyone else for that matter), what do you think about the article?
I like what I've seen of Potts, much moreso than Kilgore, too bad he's not the nominee.
Not a bad article, and thank God he won't run for the Senate again.
But, as a candidate and former Republican, he's a spoiled brat.
He's a girly man ---- he wells up in tears more than Gov. Blanco.
What are you smokin'?
He's a tax-raising liar who has cut a deal with MWarner to siphon off votes from Kilgore so Kaine can win.
Potts is a RINO who is angry that he could not win the primary, so he decided to run as an independent. His platform is a one liner -- raise taxes. In Virginia, a state that has amassed a surplus of over $1Billion, that message is not resounding with too many voters. Potts is emotional without providing any depth.
I doubt Potts will seriously hurt Kilgore's chances. If anything, he will likely take some of the liberal votes in Northern Virginia away from Kaine. The two liberal counties that make up the Washington DC suburbs will like his "government will solve all your problems" approach, especially his promise to tax the rest of the State to solve the liberal counties' traffic problems.
My county is Prince William, we went heavily for Bush and have put Bob Marshall in Richmond time after time. Yet, our traffic problems are as bad or worse than any other county, primarily due to unchecked build-out of housing without any corresponding build-out of roads and mass transit. Unfortunately, nobody seems to have any clue what to do. IMHO the solution is to get the developers to pay for necessary road improvements before agreeing to permits.
I do agree with your assessment of the election though, I don't think Potts will be much if any of a factor. I'm not excited about Kilgore, there is something about him that rubs me the wrong way, perhaps it's his ignoring of the GOA or the strange ad he ran accusing Kaine of being a Hitler sympathizer, but I just don't trust him. But, I'll vote for him because Kaine would be a nightmare of epic proportions. I suppose I'll keep my fingers crossed.
You need to get your facts straight. Kilgore did not accuse Kaine of being a "Hitler sympathizer."
All that ad did was to use Kaine's own words in which he said to an RTD report that he wouldn't give Hitler the death pentalty.
There's a huge difference.
What's troubling about that ad is not coming from the Kilgore camp. What's troubling is what Kaine said and what he believes.
No, he didn't. The ad was a deliberate distortion, factcheck.org had a pretty complete analysis of it if you want to check it out. (See: http://www.factcheck.org/article355.html)
All I'm saying is that Kilgore shouldn't need to resort to those kinds of tactics, it cheapens his campaign. I expect distortions from the left, I expect character from the right. There is a discussion on another thread of the greatness of Ronald Reagan, could you imagine Reagan ever resorting to these sorts of tactics?
I know the facts.
BUT, even if the facts were distorted (and I don't believe they were), the ad DID NOT call Kaine a "Hitler sympathizer."
Ain't no way you can spin it to say it did.
Ain't no way you can spin it to say it did.
OK, point conceeded, it was a poor choice of words on my part. But again, the ad is misleading.
Not if you know the real Tim Kaine.
I haven't bothered to learn much more about him after hearing that he used city funds to pay to bus people to an anti-gun rally. That was enough for me.
And that was one of his better moments.
The bottom line is, you can't trust him.
I lived in Richmond during the Kaine administration. He's one of the reasons I decamped for Louisa County. God help our Commonwealth if that weasel gets into the Governor's office.
an unprincipled old-line Republican who'll ruin the GOP's chances of recapturing the office of Governor....and backstabbing pro-abortion RINO.
If you're worried about growth in PW, why do you like Potts so much? He received $150,000 during the last campaign finance cycle from developers John & Til Hazel (his biggest contributors). Or don't you read campaign finance reports?
Are you aware that developers in NoVa have given over $2.6 million to both the Kaine and Kilgore campaigns?
I'm not worried about growth in PW, I'm worried about growth without road/mass transit upgrades.
