Church's Anti-Halloween Flier Upsets Family
IBS ^ | October 20, 2005 | Staff

An Ellettsville family whose home is decorated for Halloween contacted police after someone placed on its porch a flier that suggests Halloween praises the devil.

Dalene Gully told Indianapolis television station WRTV that she took offense to the flier, which was placed outside her home by the House of Prayer Church of Bloomington.

"I started reading it, and I was very, very upset by it. I found it very accusatory and very threatening," Gully said.

The church's pastor, Larry Mitchell, said the people who left the flier would have preferred to talk with Gully, but she wasn't there.

Mitchell said the church didn't intend to upset the Gully family, but rather tell people that Halloween isn't harmless fun.

"Halloween is not fantasy," Mitchell said. "We're training up our children, and obviously this lady was trained up in this. Halloween seems like it is taking just as much prominence as Christmas."

The Gully family filed a complaint with the Ellettsville Police Department. The incident also prompted the family to install an alarm system at the home, the station reported.

"This is my home, and I like Halloween. If I want to decorate my home, I have every right to decorate my home," Gully said.

If the fundies are going to leave foolish tracts on people's doorsteps accusing them of Satanism they should grow some thicker skin themselves.

We don't even know what the flyer said.

Again, if it's foolish just throw it away. Don't call the newsmedia and prattle on about how "rights" are being violated.

I have always enjoyed Halloween, dressed up as a kid and as an adult, it is fun. I decorate my house for Halloween and always will. I am a Christian, and in no way do I worship Satan when I 'celebrate' Halloween. It is a fun day folks, just a fun day.

Let's not get started on -love, or we'll all get kicked off the thread...Demon love, the love that dare not speak it's name. Should we start the -lovers agenda ping list?

When I was little we had a neighbor who would hand out pop corn balls. And then there was the big candy scare so no more homemade Halloween goodies :-(

I think I will make pop corn balls this year for our after trick or treating driveway party. In my neighborhood, everyone sits outside and hands out candy, we usually set up a table with roasted pumpkin seeds, cookies and hot cider or chocolate to give out to anyone who wants to come visit for a while. One year we dragged out the TV and played "The Nightmare Before Christmas" for the kids--it was like the Drive In!!

Interesting that he states in the cartoon on the home page that "Jesus created all of us". Don't you think the guy could get that right?

A friend of mine hauls out her Book of Common Prayer and tries to convert them to the Episcopal Church

Reminds me of my friend who, for multicultural day, wanted to bring food from her ure--WASP. Bremmer wafers and gin.

Yep, we were never allowed to eat the homemade goodies....threw them out. If we received an apple, it just might have a razor blade in it. Yes, we checked, never found a razor blade. But, ya never know :-) I will give out my favorites, and any leftovers will be brought to my job the next day...don't want to be tempted :-)

Sounds like you live in a fun neighborhood, happy Halloween to all of you!

But would there be the same response if this were a Planned Parenthood flyer? I hope we agree the first amendment applies to those we disagree with, too.

I know a good number of Christians, usually fundamentalist, who object to Halloween. And, as your article points out, each year it seems like more and more do.

As a Roman Catholic of Irish descent, I have taught my children the historical basis for Halloween--that it is "All Hallow's Eve" and historically, people of of our faith and ancestry dressed up to scare the evil spirits away. My kids like the idea of scaring evil spirits away and by virtue of that, I don't think this behavior opens the door to evil but in fact reinforces that the door must stay shut and one must take an active role in shutting the door. Further, we are sure to go to church the next day on the holy day of All Saints, so I have no problem with Halloween.

That said, I respect the right of others to celebrate or not. The lady in this article should have simply done what I would have done, thrown the flyer away!

LOL! At least it wasn't lutefisk . . .

. . . evangelism is so foreign to Episcopalians that it was just a fall down and roll on the floor scream to see her do her shtick.

The JWs or Mormons or whoever she inflicted it on must have been completely gobsmacked.

I think he's referring to the Greenwich Village parade. Very drag, dahhlingg. But as you prove, outside of NYC and some neighborhoods, no one knows about it. But I guess they want to give it publicity for some reason.

I usually buy candy I don't particularly like, just so I'm not tempted to eat it before it is handed out!

Our neighborhood is wonderful--we are so blessed! We live in an evil gated community that's basically a big cul de sac but there's lots of families with kids and we make a big party out of pretty much any occasion at all.

In 2001, my husband was due to deploy on November 1 and of course everyone was feeling very patriotic, so we made the after trick or treat party into a going away party. I was looking at photos of that event the other day!
