An illusion ripped wide open
The Washington Times ^ | October 19, 2005 | Bruce Bartlett

Posted on 10/19/2005 11:21:06 PM PDT by TBP

The truth is now dawning on many movement conservatives that George W. Bush is not one of them and never has been.

George W. Bush has never demonstrated any interest in shrinking the government. And on many occasions, he has increased government significantly. Yet if there is anything that defines conservatism in America, it is hostility to government expansion.

Read the article for some of the specifics Bartlett cites.

Bush's record contains very little for conservatives to support, yet conservatives continue to support him. It's nice to see an ever increasing part of the movement catch on to the fact that Dubya is no conservative.

The piece by Fred Barnes that was posted a couple of hours ago was on the same subject and included some salient points on GWB's brand of conservatism.

The one point he misses is compared to Clinton, President Bush looked like "Honest Abe" to conservatives. Plus, what was the alternative?

Plus, what was the alternative?

Bush's function was not to be a conservative, but to restore integrity to the Presidency after the fiasco of the Clinton years. Stopping government expansion is a problem that will not be solved by electing "conservative" politicians. What's needed is a branch of government that is not beholden to an electorate.

Without even bothering to agree or disagree, the alternatives were Algore or Horseface.

So here we are.

Suggestions??

There weren't any viable alternatives, and I'm sure you know it. What's always bothered me about his supporters, is that they are loathe to admit that he has ever done anything wrong.

If you do mention an item, it's as if you just signed an oath to support Clinton 'till death do you part. Can't tell you how destructive that has been to civil debate.

Bush has been very good an some points, and absolutely terrible on others. I don't see what's so tough about acknowledging that. It doesn't mean that you're a raving leftist, just because you recognize non-conservative actions on the part of someone you like.

We know. He was the moderate in a political race in 2000 against an enviro-weenie and in 2004 against a known traitor to the country. This is what happens when you continuously choose the "lesser of two evils." It still sucks. One day in this country people wil stop this practive and maybe choose a third party. Maybe not. I am beginning to not care.

I used to go to the gym and run for 45 minutes and work out on the stairmaster for an hour because Reagan pissed me off so much back in the 80's.

Now I look back and think what a great man and how wonderful he was.

Do a search for reagan and lame duck and you'll be supprised how the conservatives trashed him in his second term.

You young guns will be doing the same about Bush in 10 years !

The permanent cure for the hard-core Bush defenders is to send them to the HUD or HHS web site.

Remember that these Federal agencies are managed by Republicans, and have been since January, 2001.

The sites read like a socialist's wet dream.

The Bushbots will be puking within five minutes--and that will be the end of that.

I dun'no.

I've been a bit conflicted over President Bush ever since I helped get him re-elected back in November.

Prior to that, I supported him 95% of the time and believed he may just potentially be the greatest American President ever.

Now, I have the feeling I've been deceived and screwed over by him about half the time during the last 10 months.

I keep hoping that I, (and many other true conservatives), are just temporarily being misguided by "strategery" on a level I (we) am barely able to percieve... That I am being needlessly paranoid, and that he still is the man I worked for and voted for.

And I still find myself wanting to defend him from the leftist dumbasses who have been attacking him constantly for the last 6 years.

But there is still a tiny voice in the back of my head that he has deceived us, and has always been or more recently morphed into a more devious copy of his wimpy, globalist father....

I wish that tiny voice would go away and I could be happy and trust our currrent President.... And quit looking for that knife in my back.

Back to the re-education camp for you, DoughtyOne. We are disappointed.

LOL. They come back saying these are good solid programs. Even though they are, as you say, "the sites read like a socialist's wet dream."

It matters not. Winning elections is the end game to many. Winning and taking control, instead of giving up control.

most people in this country aren't "movement conservatives," any more than they're "movement liberals." You can have an ideologicallly pure party, or you can have one that wins Congressional majorities. Take your choice. That's not to say there aren't issues that shouldn't be compromised. But a lot of conservatives seem to be wanting a fight for the sake of fighting, and that mystifies me.

I voted for the Constitution Party on the last election because I couldn't tell the difference between the two major parties any more.

I kept hearing that I had to hold my nose and pull the Bush lever, but it stunk too bad.

If everybody who told me to hold my nose and vote for a RINO who have voted their convictions, maybe the Republican party would wake up, and start to act like conservatives.

What is really sad is that we finally had the house, senate, and presidency, and just wasted it.

Yearly confidence votes for all incumbants, term limits from town dog catcher to US President, and then follow Shakespear's advice on politically connected lawyers and include lobbyists! :-)

And I agree, Pubbies are wasting the majority.

Considering the alternative, President Bush is a Godsend.

But no, I do not and will not agree with many of his policies.

Still, simply put, he only has so many years to clean up the liberal BS that has contaminated this great nation. How much can one man do when many of the Senators are RINOs and he has a lying, deceitful media trying to destroy him for simple mispronunciation?

Bush may be no conservative, but he is my President, I don't always agree with him, but I will support him as much as I am able on the issues I agree with, even the one I have doubts on, particularly if it makes the rats bleed.
