Anybody see the Intel Centrino laptop advertisement on the front page of The New York Times ?
It is not going to be but for
Some people on this forum think the Mac is gay. Maybe Intel's moving that direction because of their new relationship with Apple ;-)
The Vietnamese babe in the cover story is cute.
AMD is a man's processor!
A good reason to not buy...
The "hot babe" is dressed for an awards ceremony. She is sitting in the lap of a very normal looking woman. From the look of several other ads in this series, Intel purposely used same-sex pairings specifically to avoid the inference of sexuality in having one person sit in another's lap: the person on top is typically aloof and showing no sign of interaction with the sat apon; they are still in their movie (or sports, or arts) environ, which has been transported to the sat apon's laptop.
In this one instance, this attempt at a disconnect apparently failed because you have associated her formal evening attire with being "hot," and maybe indicative of a femme-butch thing, too? Although usually any suggestion of even subliminal hint of sexuality is intentional, in this case, given the technniques used in other ads to avoid sexuality, I believe it is simply an artistic failure.
I'd add another mistake unique to this ad: The "hot babe" is smiling the gracious smile of an award winner, which is all too similar to the smile of a beloved. Again, this is atypical for the campaign.
Other ads: John Cleese, observing the contents of his tea cup while sitting in the lap of a man riding a train; Seal playing his guitar, looking away from the elderly lady whose lap he is sitting on; Tony Hawk, falling back into the lap of a fan.
In all of the other cases, the person who is sat apon is leaning back, as if to get a good view, as opposed to leaning forward as if seeking physical contact. In all cases, their hands are at their sides, even though the pose looks awkward, so that they are not depicted as reaching for physicality. In all cases, the celebrity is looking away from the sat apon. In Cleese's and Seal's case, they are leaning forward.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Here is Intel's press release on their ads:

Ads for Intel Centrino mobile technology take a fun and humorous approach to address how consumers worldwide are increasingly interested in using their laptop PCs as all-in-one entertainment systems that can be used almost anywhere, anytime, without wires. The campaign promotes the benefits of the brand as the essential technology ingredient for the ultimate mobile entertainment experience around and outside the home.
The television ads feature well-known entertainment personalities sitting on consumers' laps. Each celebrity actors John Cleese, Lucy Liu and Tony Leung; singer Seal; pro skateboarder Tony Hawk; and soccer star Michael Owen represents different entertainment genres, such as games, movies and music. The metaphor of an entertainer sitting on the consumer's lap in place of a laptop PC illustrates how Centrino mobile technology enables a vibrant, realistic mobile entertainment experience.
"The ads creatively use personalities that are well-recognized worldwide in a memorable way to effectively reinforce the brand attributes and benefits of Intel Centrino mobile technology for entertainment," said Kim. The print ads will feature the blue and magenta Intel Centrino mobile technology logo and deliver quick benefit statements on digital entertainment, such as "For incredible movie experiences in your lap, get Intel Centrino in your laptop."
My favorite is the one with Michael Moore. He's sitting on some guy's lap telling him how, if you combine a lie with a truth, it makes the lie a little bit true. Of course, the poor schmuck is crying in pain from his shattered pelvis, but you get the idea.
Weird. I think I must have been sleep-posting last night. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, stumble to the computer, check out a few threads on Free Republic and go back to bed. Sometimes I don't even remember doing that.
