LONDON (AFP) - An Irish journalist working for the British newspaper The Guardian has been kidnapped by armed men in Iraq, the London-based newspaper said.

"Rory Carroll was... kidnapped by gunmen in Baghdad. Carroll, 33, an experienced foreign correspondent, had been conducting an interview in the city with a victim of Saddam Hussein's regime. He had been preparing an article for today's (Thursday's) paper on the opening of the former dictator's trial yesterday," the paper said in its online edition.

"Carroll, who was accompanied by two drivers and a translator, was confronted by the gunmen as he left the house where he had been carrying out the interview," the paper said.

"He and one of the drivers were bundled into cars. The driver was released about 20 minutes later," it added.

Alan Rusbridger, the Guardian's editor, said on the website (www.guardian.co.uk): "We're deeply concerned at Rory's disappearance. He is in Iraq as a professional journalist - and he's a very good, straight journalist whose only concern is to report fairly and truthfully about the country.

"We urge those holding him to release him swiftly - for the sake of his family and for the sake of anyone who believes the world needs to be kept fully informed about events in Iraq today."

Carroll, a native of Dublin, spoke to Irish public radio RTE about Saddam Hussein's trial hours before he went missing.

His father Joe Carroll, a retired journalist, told BBC radio that his son had played down fears for his safety.

"He knew we were worried but he used to reassure us and say that it was not as dangerous as people outside think," he said.

On September 12, this selfsame "journalist" filed an article accusing American troops of deliberately targeting journalists and of being "out of control." Maybe he told his father it was "not as dangerous as people think" because he was on good terms with the terrorists.

You just know he's pleading with his captors, "Guys, I'm on your side!" And his captors are smiling, and nodding, and thinking, "I'm going to saw your head off."

The Guardian,...anti-American, left-wing fishwrap.

Quite frankly, the more "journalists" dead,....I don't think I care.

"Journalist" = anti-American, liar, commie, traitor, leftist, socialist scum.

All the better to deliver the message.

Pay them nothing, if they want to kill him so be it. Deal not with these bastards especially when they take their allies for faux ransom. If the Guardian pays ransom then they are simply using this incident to cover a direct cash payment to a terrorist organization and should be appropriately sanctioned.

This is a sign of desperation, we have them down and out.

We been through this before.

1) 50/50 chance he is in a heap of trouble that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

2)70/30 chance they google his name and find out he is on their "side" and let him go with him telling a tale of how misunderstood they really are.

Let Walter Cronkite save him. Our soldiers lives are too precious to risk going out to collect trash the terrorists will put out at the curb soon enough.

didn't that commie italian wench say the same thing? and it turns out that maybe she never was kidnapped; but was a ploy to deliver dollars into the hands of anyone who will kill americans. i won't hold my breath in anticipation of the guardian coughing up money to give to these savages in exchange for their reporter's "safe return."

I can't see any reason why the terrorists would think that kidnapping a guy who is basically a propagandist for them would help them unless the kidnapping was staged to allow him to be embedded with the terrorists for a while without being accused of working with them.

If he shows up shortly and writes a few stories showing the terrorists in a favorable light, I won't be the least surprised.

That was my thinking too. Either that, or it's a way for the Guardian to get some money to their terrorists. After all, we've been cutting off most of their sources.
