The American Psychological Association wants to eliminate the use of American Indian mascots, contending they create stereotypes and damage self-esteem.
"American Indian mascots are harmful not only because they are often negative, but because they remind American Indians of the limited ways in which others see them," Stephanie Fryberg said in a statement. "This in turn restricts the number of ways American Indians can see themselves."

Truth be told, I think that when schools chose an Indian as their mascot, it was a recognition of positive traits like strength, power, etc.
Anyone else wanna weigh in on this subject?
Not until I see my therapist.
PC thought has extended to areas where the supposed victim isn't aware they are a victim until the enlightened ones point it out.
The CLEVELAND MUTTLYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've also read that Indian mascots want the end of psychological groups.
Ridiculous. I have a psych degree but like most groups of elites these are just garden variety liberals trying to control everybody's lives.
This is BS and completely pisses me off.
I read a book about the process that takes place when publishers evaluate textbooks for schools and colleges. It is the most politically PC bunch of crap you ever heard of...Native American specialists are apparently the worst of the whole bunch, and they have rules about what can be said, shown in pictures etc. that would make you throw the book.
The name of the book was: The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn by Diane Ravitch
Hmmm... these people need to get a life!
At my highschool, our mascot was an Indian. A friend of mine is native american and her dad posed for the cover of the yearbook one year wearing Indian Headdress! They even included pics of traditional indian stuff - tamahawks, dream catchers, ceremonial wear, etc. in the yearbook. It was really cool!
Of course, this was the early 90's... perhaps we weren't as progressive back then.
These APA morons need their heads examined. Someday, it might help them to they go out and spend some time with Indians. I mean REAL Indians. Not those whiteys who claim that their grandma was a "Cherokee princess" and they are "offended" by these mascots.
What about naming teams after ferocious animals? Doesn't that somehow demean the players and make them feel somehow less than caring, sensitive human beings?
Where will this bs stop?
Whiteman's disease starts with the symptom of always assuming the whiteman knows best what needs to be done. Re: Marxism, Communism and a bunch of other isms.
If a significant number of Indians think they've been dissed then something should be done. Aside from a few radical blowhards, who are the Indians standing up to complain about Indian Geographical placenames, team names and mottos ( the tomahawk chop) etc?
That's exactly right. When people name things for Indians, it's usually a way to show their admiration for them. Like with our military (Apache, Black Hawk, etc.)
I am of the opinion that native American Indians are far stronger of mind than this moronic statement.
Talk about racism, so American Indians are so weak minded and easily manipulated that Indian name mascots make them look poorly upon themselves.
Oh, yea, sure is malarkey.
Thanks for the post. I would like to jump in (with a belly flop). This country sees the indigenous tribes of America as pure and brave and untainted by the history of Europe.
The truth eventually comes out doesn't it.
Only the left wants to obscure the power of the truth. They want our perception of indigenous Americans to be negative...and it isn't. In many ways...when we became Americans, we became indigenous Americans...we became Indians.
And fricken proud to be one, thank you vy much.
I think the APA is suffering from limited ways to look at things.
"American Indian mascots are harmful not only because they are often negative"
They are almost always positive.
Of course, you are totally right. Thank you. But the psychologists have to justify their existence and create demand - so they tell a group of people they should be ashamed of the way others "see" them.
Is this not obvious????
" I mean REAL Indians"
Roger that - run with some Athabaskans in Alaska - get invited to a "sweat lodge" - seperates the "men" from the "Braves" - and they make no one "wrong" for wimping out 1/2 way thru - serious sweat and bonding. Gawd i'd love to do it again.
This other stuff is BS IMNSHO ... Roger on the Vikings as well - got some Norse in me too.
I remember last year hearing some bimbette on the radio wanting to change the UMass "Sam the Minuteman" mascot because to her, he "looked like a pirate." Sometimes democracy (where it is mandatory that the individual gets their way and everyone else can stuff it.) can be a real pain in the @$$.
