Movieland Wax Museum to Close After 43 Years

When it threw open its doors in 1962, it was with all the hoopla of the Hollywood it was imitating. Searchlights combed the skies above Buena Park, a Mary Pickford look-alike cut a ceremonial ribbon and a freshly sculpted wax figure of James Dean greeted the guests.

Over the years, Movieland Wax Museum has held its own in a part of Orange County dominated by amusement alternatives such as Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland.

But today, citing a flagging customer base, the wax museum announced that it would be closing on Halloween. The owners said they also plan to close the nearby Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.

The wax figures — there are more than 300 in the Beach Boulevard museum — will either be shipped to the museum's San Francisco location or auctioned.

Rodney Fong, whose family bought the museum in the 1980s, said it had slowly become a "third day attraction" with tourists.

Fong said admission to both museums will be lowered to $5 until they close Oct. 31.

A going out of business blow out!

The creators of the wax figures who had the foresight to include a 'wick' will do well at the auction.

The museum would do well in a heavily traveled mall location.

That's sad. I had fun going there when I was a little girl.

I went there once with my grandmother and my mom when I was a kid. All of the parking spaces had names of celebrity's names marked (presumably of all the wax figures). My mom moved her car because she thought she was in a Leonard Nimoy's parking spot. My brothers and I still give her a hard time for the misunderstanding.

Now where are they going to get a good wax figure when they need one?
