Bush Pushes for Guest Worker Plan

President Bush sought support Tuesday for his guest worker plan for foreigners, hoping to win over skeptical conservatives with a pledge to clamp down on illegal immigration — one of a growing number of issues causing friction between the White House and fellow Republicans.

"As we improve and expand our efforts to secure our borders, we must also recognize that that enforcement cannot work unless it is part of a larger comprehensive immigration reform program," Bush said. "If an employer has a job that no American is willing to take, we need to find a way to fill that demand by matching willing employers with willing workers from foreign countries on a temporary and legal basis."

How about one guest worker permit for every confirmed deportee? Show the clampdown before the guest worker permits are authorized.

If guest workers are really needed, there are many potential deportees to authorize the work permits. Start by taking a paddy wagon to an illegal immigration enabling rally. If that doesn't collect enough, you can pick up those using phony IDs.

"We're going to need more than just brute enforcement," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the Senate Judiciary Committee. "We're going to need a temporary worker program as well."

Too bad we can't deport Chertoff and Bush from Washington.

Here's the loophole for all the recent deportation rhetoric.

There are merits for a guest worker program if properly administered.

Beats the chit out of amnesty for illegals.

I shall now don my armor plated flame resistant suit and go to the bunker.

I guess Chertoff ending the "catch and release" policy might cause a bit of trouble for the context of that day-late, dollar short story.

We have workers here now. Run off the illegals and put the dead beats to work. No work, no pay, no money, no booze, no drugs, no party, no couch dances. Work or starve. No one promised you a life. Life is your responsibility. You have to earn your keep. No one voted you a freebie life. Your inability to prepare yourself for life is not my fault or problem. Let the dead beats work.

""If an employer has a job that no American is willing to take..."

Then let the employer raise the compensation for said job or innovate or automate.

What part of HELL NO, does the man I contributed, walked my precinct and voted for not understand?

Send all illegals back home President Bush and let them apply in an acceptable manner with the requsite background checks (their expense, of course.)

please cut that out. I grew up anglo in a border town and my first job was running the hobart machine washing dishes. My second job was bussing tables. I think these are outstanding teen age jobs. We don't need cheap foreign labor to do this. What are we, UAE Emirs?

With the conservative base roiling already, Bush just ought to knock off talking about immigration for a while. Is Rove so preoccupied with the Grand Jury that he isn't doing politics right now?

It's beginning to appear this is the case.

Well, THIS should be wildly popular! Thud!

This President wants a popularity of 16 & he's right on track for it. What else to expect from this "Two-Party Cartel". So next election cycle we will nominate two bufoons & we will have to make the judgement of which one will do us the most harm. Or - we could for a couple of elections vote outside of this cartel for someone who will look out for the middle class taxpayers.
