Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, said he expects indictments this week in the CIA leak case involving White House advisers Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.
Kristol said "the mood is bleak in the White House today, and said the environment surrounding the federal grand jury testimony is "pretty grim. Although the indictments may not ultimately result in anything substantive, Kristol said there is a pins-and-needles feel to the grand jury investigation into the leaking of a CIA agent's name to the media in 2003.
"The net has been cast wide, Kristol told Fox News Tuesday. "Lots of junior aides have testified. Its been a very comprehensive investigation by the prosecutor. I think there will be indictments and the mood is pretty bleak in the White House.
As for what this means for President Bush and the daily working of the White House, Kristol said it is too early to tell.
"The White House has to ask, How do we segregate this? This is a problem, but the legal system has to run its course.
"Meanwhile, Kristol said, "the president has to take the initiative on foreign policy and economic policy and sort of set this aside.
And what exactly is a neo-com? My political stance on most issues is to the right of Jesse Helms
Exactly, however I believe you're speaking about Irving, who considered himself the 'Godfather'. BTW, the little Frummer boy went down a long path a few years back singing the praises of Irving as well. Worthless article doubting the patriotism of anyone that didn't pull the neocon line.
The Weekly Standard and Kristol were big proponents of The War on terrorism
Again, exactly.
Kristol thinks we and the white House give a crap what he thinks
Well considering the architects for the WOST were tied to his little organization and signed the statement of principles, somebody cared what he thought at one time. Any of those names familiar at the bottom of that page?
Neo-Com = New Communist
As in most of today's Democrats and other lefty types.
I'm sorry if you sounded like one of them.
I just find it amusing that now he finds a conservative bone, realizing something's rotten somewhere in Washington, and he's suddenly become lower than Ted Kennedy.
For the record, as a conservative I never listened to anything coming from the Standard, but I've never considered the administration conservative either. Hawkish maybe. Conservative no
But if I had to bet, I would expect no indictments from this grand jury and Fitzgerald will merely release a report that criticizes a number of people for loose handling of classified information and recommends tighter controls on this information. The left has had its expectations built up into a rapt anticipation of indictments against Bush officials, and there will be crushing disappointment among liberals when there are no indictments, except possibly Wilson for the initial leak or Miller for perjury. Meanwhile sales of Prozac and Zoloft will soar in liberal New England.
Oh for God's sake...I am so tired of the "shoot the messenger" posts on FR I'm ready to BARF!!!!!!
it pains me to have you make a play on Kristol's name with "Kristallnacht" which was such an ugly event in human history. pls reconsider.
Just passing it along for what it's worth.
Good, that makes the investigation look even more thorough and impartial. Fitz is just following his instructions from AG Gonzalez.
Perhaps fitzy is waiting to see how Ronnie Earle fares?
We are going to have to start having the old "deeply saddened" pic of Tom Daschle replaced by one of Kristol with his head in his hands.
5/02/03 - In the Boston Globe on 10/02/05, Wilson states that he has been advising the Kerry campaign for about 5 months
7/06/03 - Wilson writes his famous "What I Didnt Find in Africa" article for the NYT. Mind you, he was a Kerry adviser at the time.
7/14/05 - The Novak article comes out identifying Valerie Plame
7/29/04 - The Senate Committe investigating Wilson's report discredits it and says it was wrong and useless.
Matt Cooper of Time has testified that he called Rove initially, but it was Rove who said that Wilson's wife was CIA, but Rove didnt say she was covert and didnt name her.
Cooper subsequently brought up Plame's identity with Libby, who only confirmed it for him.
Rove confirmed Plame's identity with Novak.
Valerie's last overseas posting (strange wording by Mr. Wilson himself) ended in 1997, however, some reports say her cover was blown earlier by Aldrich Ames in 1994.
European and British intelligence agencies still stand by the claim that Iraq sought yellowcake from Niger.
Plame met Wilson in 1997, Wilson divorced his wife in 1998, he and Plame bought a house together in 1998. How, exactly, are affairs with married men by covert operatives considered by the CIA?
Valerie revealed her status as a NOC on her 3rd or 4th "date" with Wilson, according to Vanity Fair.
The upshot, while working for the Kerry campaign, Wilson wrote an untruthful column for the New York Times to smear Bush by altering the facts he gathered from a CIA mission. A mission that he got because of his wife. The Senate later discredited Wilson's claims and came to the opposite conclusion from his report. Wilson had claimed that Plame had nothing to do with it. After being discredited, Wilson was dropped from the Kerry campaign.
You know, to the average American, this whole CIA incident has no meaning whatsoever. While at lunch yesterday at work discussing this story, seven people in my office had no idea who Karl Rove is.
How would Kristol know anything? What high level source in the Administration would trust him since he has been trashing the President with vitriol usually reserved for Democrats and traitors?
He hates Bush, he hates Meirs, he is pro-choice, pro- federally funded embryonic stem cell research etc. The true colors of the President's detractors who claim to be the "true" Conservatives is showing now, and it ain't pretty.
How McCain who spent most of the VN war as a prisoner has become a military expert is beyond me. The man was a navy pilot.
Kristol is proving that he is afflicted with whining man disease.
LOL. Thanks!
