Bubba's bubbly CD has a sax-y allure
Bill Clinton's CD features the expected jazz standards, but also some gospel, folk and spiritual music.
A sampling of the former President's favorite tunes is on a new CD, "The Bill Clinton Collection: Selections From the Clinton Music Room," that showcases his diverse (though hardly cutting-edge) taste in music.
Clinton, of course, is an accomplished saxophone player who was never shy about performing in public - the CD cover art has a Ray-Ban-wearing Bubba blowing on his instrument, a familiar man-of-the-people image he honed while running for the White House in 1992.
So it's no surprise that several of the album's 11 tracks are well-worn jazz songs by such sax stalwarts as John Coltrane (with singer Johnny Hartman) on "My One and Only Love"; David Sanborn, who performs a breezy "Harlem Nocturne," and Zoot Sims doing a swinging rendition of "Summertime." Also included is Russian saxophonist Igor Butman's moody "Nostalgie."
The CD, which lists for $15.95, also has familiar cuts by jazz greats Miles Davis ("My Funny Valentine") and Art Tatum ("There Will Never Be Another You").
But Clinton, who chose the songs himself to raise money for his William J. Clinton Foundation, also displays his affection for the gospel music and old spirituals he grew up with in his native Arkansas. Among those selections are Mahalia Jackson's "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" by Nina Simone.
Clinton likewise tosses in a meaningful tune from his personal life - Judy Collins' folksy version of Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Morning," which inspired the former First Daughter's name.
In case anyone was wondering: No, Clinton did not include Mitch Ryder's "Devil With a Blue Dress On."
He's a real lounge lizard.
They're great for skeet shooting.
Put Your Leg On My Shoulder
Your Lying Eyes
Pappa Was A Rolling Stone
You're No Good
Ooooohhhh, everything about this article gave me douche chills.

He also has a new line of "paper" coming out to help promote the cd.
Blow daddy, blow!~}
Maybe "Wet Dream" by The Fugs..
Probably written after she was born.
geez, what won't this hick from Arkansas peddle in a desperate search for a legacy?
As if he even picked the songs. More likely the music company came up with the idea, picked the songs, and then pulled up to his house with a dump truck full of money to get him to agree to put his name and image on the cover.
NOT. He sounds like a fart in a barrel and his "command" of the instrument is pretty rudimentary, as are his chops (or lack of same, to be more precise).
Just because he can get a sound to come out of the damn thing hardly qualifies him as being accomplished. Leave it to the lefty Daily News to fawn all over him in spite of his lack of accomplishment.
Just because he's black does NOT make him an "accomplished" sax player.
Let me know when he can make it through the head of "Donna Lee" or improvise a chorus on the changes to "Giant Steps."
Clinton's sax playing is accomplished in the same way that Dr. Johnson's dog walking on two legs is (i.e. he doesn't do it well, but what's noteworthy is that he can do it at all.)
WHY????!!!!
I get the idea that the writer of this piece laughed himself silly writing lines like: "performing in public" and "blowing his instrument"...
Does it include Monica on the french horn?
Nice album cover. I especially like the big red nose.
More BS for the "Clinton Legacy".
