If the Catholic Church wants to prevent sexual abuse by priests, several abuse experts said, there are better ways to do it than by trying to bar gay men from the clergy.
The church recently began checking American seminaries for ''evidence of homosexuality," and the pope is widely expected to ban actively gay men from taking holy orders.
But it will be tricky to cull gays from the priesthood, the abuse experts said this month. And it would be more effective -- and more humane -- to target likely abusers rather than all gays.
''There's no adequate way to screen out homosexuality," said Martin P. Kafka, a psychiatrist at Harvard's McLean Hospital. ''We don't have any lab tests."

Still, when adults molest children past puberty, they tend to follow their sexual orientation. When the victims are older, straight men tend to molest girls and gay men molest boys. According to one survey, two-thirds of the victims were 12 or older when the abuse began.

Furthermore, he said, he argued, ''If you have a policy of excluding homosexuals, all the applicants to the seminaries who are homosexual will just lie."

And in current-day America, he added, gay people are much likelier to acknowledge and accept their sexual orientation, so they may present far lower risks than the repressed types of the old days

1. What kind?--All referred to us by the court system, the Catholic Church and self-referrals seeking help. Most males, and a rare female now and then.
2. See the definition I gave for pedophilia. 'Incidences' of child molestation often do not constitute pedophilia. We saw those who were habitual offenders, usually not one-timers.
3. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo Provera) reduces testosterone in males, 500 mg in each buttock/week until pre-pubescent levels achieved. It works until the offender manages (and they often do) a drug-free holiday.
If they are chaste, yes.
The Deacon doesn't care -- he wants a married priesthood. Period. At least that is my opinion based on watching years of his posts. Facts are of no moment, his wants are all that matter.
You are changing the subject, but, yes, I would agree with you.
Really? Chaste? So when they fail - then boot them?
Forgive me if I am not convinced by your anecdotal experiences. The statistics simply do not bear you out.
Sure. Heterosexuals and homosexuals who cannot remain chaste should reconsider the celibate lifestyle.
In SE Ohio I know I saw whatever (that means all) the court system had on its dockets...far more male homosexual pedophiles. The fact that Ohio's profile was virtually identical to that I saw in Maryland (Johns Hopkins) and that Johns Hopkins also had international cachement, is a mighty powerful statistic.
Your second statistic was the one that doesn't compute with accepted statistics.Unless you forgot a word or I misread what you said, you stated that 90% of the 90% (who were males) abused little boys. Since most pedophiles are heterosexuals and abuse girls more than boys but in essence any child will do,how can it be that Johns Hopkins treated this incredibly skewed pedophile population?
I suppose it seems a bit far for one who is not catholic, but do you criticize the practices of homosexuals? That activity is condemned in the Bible, as is those that make chaste vows, to make themselves holy. The practices of the church are traditions, and as such are not the command of God. Therefore, they are open to interpretation and questioning.
Priests that commit sexual acts, are burning with lust. Those that remain chaste are repressing some of the most basic of human urges. They quite frankly believe that to not marry or have children, makes them more acceptable to God. They are making a huge assumption, for no reason IMNSHO.
Of course everyone chooses how to live their life, not just homosexuals.
I would say, a man or woman can be a priest. They should be free to marry anyone that I or anyone else can. Homosexuals should not have the special right to marry those that the law does not allow to marry now.
"Those that remain chaste are repressing some of the most basic of human urges."
All single Catholics who remain true to the Word of God are both celibate and chaste. They make the same natural choice that the celibate priesthood does. Every married person who remains chaste when seperated from their spouse does as well. Since the Bible tells us that these ARE choices that God wants us to make, why are they "a huge assumption"?
By definition, a man that molests boys, is a homosexual. The definition of a homosexual is one that has sex with those of the same sex.
Here are your errors:1. Most pedophiles are not heterosexuals.2. The 'any child will do' is absolutely not characteristic of pedophiles. Pedophiles have a very narrow focus of their victims: usually males between the ages of 7-10 years old. They are almost always fixated on the gender and the age of their victims. (e.g., 11 yr olds are too old for them). And recall what I said earlier:
Isolated "Incidences' of child molestation often do not constitute pedophilia.
I think you and Sinkspur are confusing child sexual molestation with pedophilia. There is a difference.
John the Baptists father was if the tribe of Benjamin, and tended to the holy of holies. A married Priest, imagine that. Of course someone could show me the verse in the New Testament that commands those that become priests to remain chaste, and the women that serve the church to do so also.
Yes, of course. Did I say something to the contrary?
The data is clear, most of the priest abusers abuse post pubescent males. This is a HOMOSEXUAL abuse issue, not a pedophile issue. It is a result of an overwhelming homosexual culture within certain dioceses and certain seminaries. The DEACON knows this - he is playing games. Again.
I'm done arguing with you. There is NO DIFFERENCE legally, or psychlogically, between child molesters and pedophiles.
