Perks for perverts

There are few people more loathsome in this world than child molesters. Society spends billions every year investigating, apprehending, prosecuting, incarcerating and treating people who sexually exploit children. But in California, pedophiles are a protected class who in the realm of housing enjoy all the special anti-discrimination rights and privileges granted to minorities, the handicapped, homosexuals and others.

In a column she wrote for The Wall Street Journal, Catherine Seipp of the Independent Women's Forum said California's version of Megan's Law includes a provision that prohibits landlords from using the state Megan's Law database to weed out undesirable tenants, potential or current. It also forbids them from telling other tenants that paroled molesters are living in their midst. If they refuse to rent to a sex offender, landlords may be brought up on discrimination charges and fined up to $25,000. This has prompted some landlords to resort to bribing pedophiles to move out. Perversion, in California at least, pays.

In April, a bill that would have revoked this special right was killed -- by the legislature's Public Safety Committee. The California Apartment Association intends to try to resuscitate the measure in January. But liberal lawyer-lawmakers, buttressed by the American Civil Liberties Union, are adamant that child molesters have civil rights that need to be protected from landlord "vigilantism." Letting landlords discriminate against child molesters is like denying someone a driver's license just because he's an illegal alien.

And we thought Connecticut's legislature was nuts.

This has put landlords across California in a precarious position. If they can't keep pedophiles out and can't warn other tenants of their presence, and one of these sickos goes out and molests children, landlords may be sued for failing to protect kids against known dangers.

Nothing like a good Catch 22 to enrich the trial lawyers.

Why don't the landlords publish the information off the website and place it in the mailbox of every resident. I am sure that there is a least one person who has had a personal experience with abuse and will do the right thing.

Homosexual rights have become mainstreamed in the political dialog. How long until we see the same happen with any number of other paraphiles? What's next? Zoophiles? Necrophiles? Normalization of incest?

It's just a matter of time.

Liberalism at its finest. Protect the poor pedophiles from the mean old parents.

Morally, of course, landlords should be able to refuse to rent to anyone for any reason. Your private property is yours, and you have the right to rent only to people you choose. You can be a bigot, a Nazi, an Islamofascist, a jerk of any description--the property's still yours and no one should be able to make you rent to someone you don't like.

You are saying all homosexual men are pedophiles?

Homosexuality is wrong, pedophilia is a crime.

No, poor choice of words on my part.

Freedom and property rights, what a novel idea!

And here in Iowa cities are passing laws banning sex offenders from living inside city or county limits. In the whole state, they can't live within 2000 ft of schools or day cares.

Guess I know where they will all be heading.

and in that few, corrupt politicians and judges, more people suffer because of them both should have their arms, legs and neck skinned, salted and fed to sharks

Seeems like half the people on this site are opposed to those ideas, so maybe you should spread it around.

"What's next? Zoophiles? Necrophiles? Normalization of incest?"

I seem to recall seeing recently an article that spoke about the legalization of polyamorism (a.k.a. polygamy) in the Netherlands.

Can California be far behind?
