LONDON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- British officials say as many as 70 young Muslim men have left the country for Iraq to fight in the insurgency against the U.S.-led occupation.
The London Sunday Times cited unnamed British counterterrorism officials whom it did not quote directly, except to describe the movement of young fanatics to Iraq in the past two years as "a steady trickle."
The paper said Iraqi insurgent leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had set up a network in Britain "to recruit and train would-be suicide bombers and gunmen."
It said the group was called Ansar al-Fath, or Partisans of Victory. And that it was linked Ansar al-Islam, one of the organizations that the British government wants to ban under proposed anti-terror legislation it published last week.
It said Ansar al-Fath gave "logistical support to foreign fighters in Iraq and uses the internet to find new recruits for Zarqawi."
It added officials were warning that some jihadists had returned to the country "and may be planning attacks."

This could be seen as good news. They have left the UK and will soon be shot or imprisoned.
The ones that survive will be back to recruit even more jihadis. The UK's human rights legislation has made anti-terror legislation close to useless. The high court regularly overturns any such laws as violations of human rights.
Last week the court ruled that all prisoners have the right to vote. A few years back, they ruled that non-citizens have the same -- or more -- rights as citizens, seriously impeding the ability of the government to hold suspected foreign terrorists for more than a few days without specific charges.
Zarqawu and his ilk know a safe haven when they see it.
The recruiters of the young and vulnerable into hatred, murder, genocide and suicide-for-sex are the core problem of Islamofascism.
These monsters behind the scenes will continue doing their evil deeds below the radar of most free countries.
It is the EU Human Rights Charter that causes the problem and not UK legislation but this is being examined at the moment in light of 7/7.
As for prisoners voting that has little to do with terrorists, but I see nothing wrong with a citizen of a country voting. Democratically that is their right.
The UK has recently banned a whole plethora of groups from the country because of their terrorist links.
Hmmm... Maybe there is something to the Iraq flypaper theory. - tom
