Tim Wise, a prominent anti-racist activist, writer, and director of the new Association for White Anti-Racist Education (AWARE), will be speaking at Stetson University on Thursday October 20th at 7:00 PM. The speech will take place in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building. Wise is the author of two newly released books; "White Like Me : Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son", and "Affirmative Action: Racial Preference In Black And White."
He also writes columns, which can be found on his website, www.timwise.org. Here are some of the "highlights":
My Life as A Resident Alien (June 13, 2004) " I do remember feeling good in 1981, the day Reagan was shot. Now I know that's terrible. But I was 12, and responding in the kind of immature fashion so typical for a pre-teen. Blame it on hormones, or whatever. I didn't want him to die; in fact I remember feeling "good" that he had pulled through; but I was sorta hoping that maybe he'd have to step down, maybe he'd be incapacitated just long enough to be unable to finish out his Presidency. That maybe he'd have to go back to his ranch and live out his days as a private citizen. Yes, I felt very good about that. Until I heard Al Haig say that he was in charge until Reagan returned, which, although not accurate, nonetheless made clear to me that indeed, things could be even worse."

Don't misunderstand. I guess one could say that I too support the troops, but surely not in the way that you and other flag-wavers intend...I support them deserting, going AWOL, and disobeying the unlawful orders that are the hallmark of modern warfare: unlawful because they almost always violate international law."
"Consistently Inconsistent: Rhetoric Meets Reality in the War on Terrorism" (November 15, 2001) "So, contrary to the claims of many — that the left seeks to justify attacks on America because of our foreign policy history — the truth is quite the opposite. If anything, it is the supporters of the war whose position tends toward a justification of the events of 9/11. To support Operation Enduring Freedom one must accept that killing civilians is acceptable, and that preventive war is a positive thing, and that harboring terrorists is justification for attack. And these notions actually lend validity to terrorist attacks on the U.S: not only those of recent months, but more in the future."

- Is a black American killing a white American? No problem.
- Is a black American killing another black American? No problem.
- Is a black African killing another black American? No problem.
- Is a muslim Arab killing an American or Israeli? No problem.
- Is a muslim Arab killing another muslim Arab? No problem.
The proper objection is not that white Americans or Israelis should be allowed to kill arbitrarily as this clown thinks that every other ethnice should be allowed to do. The objection is that this foolishness is "the 'soft' biggotry of low expectations, which is fundamentally contemptuous of everyone. It is second-guessing arrogance, nothing more.
The truth is, as Thomas Sowell points out, that although Christians did not attack the (already ancient and ubiquitous) institution of slavery as an institution until the 19th Century, and not all Christians ever did, nobody else but Christians have ever attacked slavery as an institution. The fact that slavery is not a recognized institution now traces only to the fact white Christians with rifles decided to go into harm's way to end it. For no other reason than that they thought it was wrong.
