'Devil' Cast Out of Pr. William (Charlie Daniels Song Voiolates Separation of Church & State)
Washington Post ^ | Sunday, October 16, 2005 | Ian Shapira

After the devil went down to Georgia, it seems, he got censored in Prince William County.

In preparation for a guest appearance at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, the marching band at C.D. Hylton High School had a logical and seemingly innocuous idea: play a Georgia-themed song. They decided on "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," by the Charlie Daniels Band.

But early this month, a local newspaper, the Potomac News, published a letter by a Woodbridge resident who, after having seen the C.D. Hylton Bulldawg Marching Band perform the country-western hit at a football game, wondered how a song about the devil could be played at school events, because of the separation of church and state.

Fearing bad public reaction, Hylton's longtime band director, Dennis Brown, pulled the song from the playlist. "I was just being protective of my students. I didn't want any negative publicity for C.D. Hylton High School," he said.

But Brown's strategy backfired. The decision has created a furor, and even Charlie Daniels has weighed in.

"I am a Christian, and I don't write pro-devil songs. Most people seem to get it. It's a fun little song," Daniels said Friday in a telephone interview from Mokena, Ill., where he was scheduled to perform a concert. "I think it's a shame that the [marching band director] would yield to one piece of mail. If people find out that he can be manipulated that easily, he's going to have a hard way to go."

How will it take before the PC Thought Police go around school campuses requiring all students to report daily to the Center of Indoctrination & Re-Alignment of Proper Thought? There, students will have to reveal any thoughts, no matter how remote, about religion.

Welcome to Hell, as designed by Secular Liberals.

There was a time when society housed the mentally ill in asylums.

Now we print their letters in the paper and guide our society by their barely-coherent, paranoid ravings.

People like this resident are the reason God made fists.

Sadly LOL. They are out of control. I've got an idea. Let's just all poke our eyes out so we can't see. That's the answer to all our problems. If we can't see, we can't judge. We can't covet. And we can't hate. It's the only answer.

"I guess I need to go back to school. I thought the idea behind our country was that the majority ruled? You know, like the majority of people voted for the President's re-election and now the ruling party is knuckling under to every left wing nut out there? I give up!"

Did anyone else find that line interesting?

There are so many troubling aspects to this situation.

My 2 daughters both perform in a marching band and we have seen Hylton's show and let me tell you it is FABULOUS!! They use an electric violin and the effect is wonderful. This show is well put together and it is a result of hours of hard work through the hot VA sun all summer.

The parent that complained does not have children that go to any public school; they are homeschooled but they go to high school football games for the enjoyment of the activity. In this article he said that he never meant for the band to not be allowed to play the song, but that he wanted to open a "philosophical discussion." Well, isn't that great news for the kids! It would have been nice if the parent had thought out his actions first, and perhaps, just maybe, he could have filed his complaint after the season.

I'm disappointed in the band director to be sure, but he had no way of knowing that the parent didn't really want them to not play, just to "discuss." The parent COULD have and still could file suit and an expensive lawsuit would probably mean the end of the marching band program at Hylton, and other Prince William schools.

Our family is heartbroken over this, only because we know the amount of work these kids put into this program. I've seen how my own 2 girls are after a 6 hour practice in 100 degree weather and I know it was no different for these kids.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping the kids will be allowed to play at the Peach Bowl. But any program they do will be vastly inferior to one that has been planned, programmed and rehearsed for 5 months. Doing a previous year program is a possibility, but unlikely as at least 1/4 of the students will have graduated, sizes of groups could have shifted, etc.

Well, the guy got his 2 cents in. Hope he is satisfied with the result.

I always thought the song was inspired by Manly Wade Wellman's short stories.

Anyone else remember when the Johnny Cash-Travis Tritt version of the song appeared on Beavis and Butthead? "That's supposed to be Satan? He looks like the fat guy from Van Halen!" I've seen scarier Satans in a Mr.Big video" "Yeah, they could have gotten Richard Marx, and it would have been scarier than this!"
