It is a very cinematic description of the scene.
Even Roger Ebert has compiled it in his book of movis-ism. It is still seen today even when it is not the common method of text editing anymore.

I agree the story sounds very convenient...but FWIW I have a blinking cursor in every program that allows typing, and I would guess you do, too.
