'God Bless America' signs stir atheist protest
Worldnet Daily ^ | October 15, 2005 | Unknown

An atheist group is complaining about two signs posted outside a city hall in New York state that declare "God Bless America."

But the signs hung by a Long Island official outside the town hall of Babylon, N.Y., are perfectly legal, according to a group specializing in constitutional law that has volunteered to defend them.

"The phrase 'God bless America' does not violate the Constitution," said Gary McCaleb, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund.

"If it did," he added, "then all the Democrat and Republican members of Congress standing on the steps of the Capitol singing 'God Bless America' after 9-11 would have been subject to arrest."

The official, Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone, reportedly posted the two signs outside the town hall in the village of Lindenhurst to honor American men and women serving in the military.

One of the signs, an 11-foot banner, reads, "Thank You to Our Troops, God Bless America." The other sign reads, "God Bless America" and displays a community calendar on the reverse side.

We have come up with a way to offend more athiest, and fight the ACLU at the same time.

I'm an atheist and I'm not offended. You don't hear anything out of most atheists and I would venture a guess that most people complaining about how it offends us are not atheists, but just lefties looking to pick a fight.

Let me rephrase this then...we have come up with a way to offend oversensitive athiests, and fight the ACLU at the same time.

Exactly! My brother is an athiest, and every bit as conservative as I am. These are America hating, left wing ACLU type punks!

It isn't often that my sleepy little Town of Babylon makes national news, and town supervisor Steve Bellone is a Democrat. I commend him for standing up for what is right instead of cow-towing to some liberal pressure group based in another state (Wisconsin).

As an aside, many of the districts within the Town of Babylon have voted Republican over the past 4 POTUS elections .... we are an oasis of red within a vast sea of blue here ....

God Bless the Town of Babylon

Jay,

In my neck of the woods a resident has the following front bumper sticker on her truck:

"GODLESS BLESSINGS"

I was disgusted at this deliberate display contrived
to be offensive, provocative, disrespectful...even hurtful.
So passive-aggressive...but nevertheless a frontal
attack on the gentle, generous Christians in my small modest community.

I received an email from one of my cousins, which is circulating around the web, related to this post.

People are going to stamp, make stickers for, or write, "In God We Trust" on the back of all their outgoing mail. Sounds like another good idea, in addition to the lawn and car signs.

Agree. Most of it is the ACLU and their Communist backers who have as their agenda the destruction of the United States.

I'm an atheist. I don't mind these signs. Please don't assume that atheism automatically means being opposed to all displays of religious sentiments. It does not. SOME atheists may object. I do not.

Yeah, we need to be careful and not always use the shotgun approach to where we might hit a few friendlies while going after the ones who are truly responsible for wanting to change the fabric of our society. I can live with someone being atheist but when it comes to the ones like Michael Newdow and the ACLU who want to thrust their agenda on us, then we will have a fight. It's like the homosexuality debate, I'm sure most would want to live in peace and just keep it in their bedrooms and lives but it is the ones who want to force it down our throats are the ones who need to be taken down a peg or two. Sometimes you need the precision of a target rifle instead of a shotgun to use my analogy again.
