I was on welfare ONCE. This article is a lie. We rejoiced when Hubby got a job. There was no way to live on welfare and eat. It was a horrible experience.
Depends on how much the state subsidizes. In New York, you may have to limit your diet to Mickey-Ds and government cheese, but you can get by provided you get into subsidized housing.
BTW..my statement was not aimed at one timers like yourself. I am speaking to the generational people.
I'm sure it was for you and your family, as it would be for me and mine. The thing is, you were used to work and care for yourselves and had some pride and self-esteem. There lies the difference.
You probably didn't know how to work the system and wanted to eat healthy.
Change to fast food and hit ALL the agencies -- get overlapping benefits. If this is a lifestyle and the education given to you, your "work" IS gaming the system.
A brief amount of time on welfare -- that is to say using it as intended as a safety net -- isn't really what this article is about IMHO.
We were also on welfare, once...and it was really horrible...I could not believe that people actually wanted to be on welfare...
Like you, we were ecstatic, when we no longer had to be on welfare...
Yeah I agredss, Anyone that believes that Welfare is some gravy train or disability payments allow for people to live in luxury should be forced to try to live on it for a 6 month period. They would be bedding to get back to their regular lives.
This article is not a lie.
As you said, you were on welfare...once.
You were not expert in milking the system. Many who have been on welfare as a matter of extended subsistence are doing quite well.
I've heard of applicants turning down job offers stating that they make more on welfare.
I bet your hubby didn't settle for an entry level job like the article is referring to. I have seen a lot of people living generation after generation on welfare because 'it beats working'. Of course they often have something else on the side and of course the more babies they have, the higher the payments.
