Kansas Senator, Looking at Presidential Bid, Makes Faith Bedrock of Campaign (Tips Hand on Miers?)
The New York Times ^ | 10/14/05 | David Kirkpatrick

Manchester, NH: After testing his (2008 Presidential) stump speech Tuesday night, Senator Sam Brownback rose early on Wednesday for a tour of the cavernous chapel and regimental dining hall used by the 30 remaining monks of St. Anselm's abbey.

Mr. Brownback, an evangelical Protestant turned Roman Catholic from Kansas who attends two services in the two faiths each Sunday is contemplating a big bet in resurgence of traditonalist faith.

He came here to asses the potential for a Republican presidential primary campaign centered on opposition to abortion and support for God in public life, while back in Washington his current role as the Republican most publicly questioning the Supreme Court nomination of Harriet E. Miers is becoming the first big test of his long shot campaign.

That is not stopping Mr. Brownback from bringing up Ms. Miers nomination in his first steps to the campaign trail.

When he was a guest lecturer at a St. Anslem class on Wednesday, a student asked the 'one thing' he would have done differently if he had been in the White House the past five years.

Other primary contenders have staked out critiques of the Iraq War or the budget deficit, but Mr. Brownback's answer was President Bush's second nomination for the court.

With Ms. Miers, Brownback said 'we just don't know her background on judicial restraint and the constitution.'

The premise of his ambition is that the country has 're-engaged' in faith in a historic revival. He hopes that a combination of a humble earnest style and broader focus on humanitarian issues with enable him to capitalize on the revival more effictively than predecessors Pat Robertson or John Ashcroft.

When the picture of him with the afro shows up, it's going to hurt him with some voters.

Bush is acting like a King not a President and this "royal" pick is offensive... The SC is not where "loyalty" to a friend is rewarded. It's a place where "loyalty" to the constitution is rewarded.

Bush is ticking off a lot of good people...

I contacted [my] Senator Brownback last night thanking him for his response to the Miers nomination and urged him to vote her down.

If he backstabs on Miers he is done and he knows it. The party, not the Media, nominates in 2008. Don't get your hopes up, he will not be backstabing the Pres on Miers.

I think he will play it on the fence and then go with the flow, which will almost certainly be in favor of confirmation.

This Miers pick is in the same catagory as his old man 'hangin around with Rapist42. You got your 'normal' Bush... the one you voted for twice who cut taxes & stood up to al Qaeda... and then you got 'Bizzaro Bush'.

The only Senator that I could think of voting for (at this moment) is George Allen, because he was governor of VA.

The other 99 would be worthless as President.

Feel free to respond if you disagree with me. I do like my junior Senator (Cornyn), but he's not ready for a Presidential race. I'm sure there's a few others that I could vote for after considerable thought, but I'm not ready to pull the lever for Senator Sam.

Good thing 2008 is a few years away.

George Allen is my man! We love him here in VA. Would love to see JC Watts come back and be his running mate - think about all the football metaphors.

I know Sam well, and he always tries to be fair. I likewise contacted him, but I think you will find Miers will get a hearing.

Please read this article.

I'm probably going to back Guilani in '08 at this point if he can get his priorites straight on life issues.

Hopefully, he will beat Hillary like a red-headed stepchild at the national polls.

NOt really. Knee Jerkers and Conclusion Jumpers have convinced themselves that they should be outraged but other than complaining that they are ignorant about MIers have no substantial objections.

But on FR 70+% say let the Constitution work.

I'm probably going to back Guilani in '08 at this point if he can get his priorites straight on life issues, 2nd amendment issues, "gay rights" issues.....

I won't vote for any senator in the Presidential primaries that votes for confirmation. Make the right choice Sam!
