Ohio Senate Passes Eminent Domain Bill
The Ohio Senate passed legislation that would ban local governments from seizing land through eminent domain for the purposes of private development.
The Senate voted unanimously to pass SB 167. The measure was introduced in response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision, which upheld the government's use of eminent domain to acquire private property for private development projects and to generate more tax revenue.
The Ohio House is expected to consider the legislation promptly. If passed by the House and enacted, the bill would impose a moratorium on the use of eminent domain for the purposes of private development until the legislature can study the issue more thoroughly.

Are you listening Charlie Crist?
yeah but that bill won't stop the local governments from stopping farmers and private landowners from selling their land either.
Seriously, out on the eastside of Columbus, a couple farmers wanted to sell their land so that a bunch of houses and a strip mall and a Wal Mart could be built. Literally the local governments told them they COULDN'T sell their land.
Finally Ohio Republicans do something right.
Glad to see you and your tagline are back:)
And now if Ohio can get Ken Blackwell elected, things may very well be looking up for Ohio.
Enviroweenie regulations?
nope.
The excuse was TRAFFIC.
literally.
LOL
me too :)
until the legislature can study the issue more thoroughly.
Looks like we're not entirely out of the woods yet.
yeah but it was a unamimous vote in the OHio Senate and my bet is the House will be the same.
They won't be in session until after the elections I don't believe so that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
"until the legislature can study the issue more thoroughly"
This actually means until after the next election cycle when the moratorium will be abandoned.
It's a band aid
I'm sure it will pass but what worries me is this is just a temporary ban while they "study" the issue. If they have to "study" a no brainer like this we need to make sure they've completed the study and enacted a final decision before we hit the polls next fall. Any legislator who perverts imminent domain to allow this type private property confiscation deserves no conservatives vote.
then the point is to get conservatives elected to the Ohio House and Senate then.
it is a band aid, but it is a band aid in the right direction.
Ohio is full of RINOs, but sometimes it will screw up in the right direction :-)
Could be that they're being considered critical to Ohio being able to sustain it's own source of food production.
I remember reading about legislation that would allow certain farms to be sold only to someone else who wanted to farm the land and not to developers.
Study it? I don't want to see them study it! I want them to fix it! This doesn't stop me from having to worry about the future. Grrrr
And why waste our tax dollars on a study? We don't need a study, we know it's wrong! wrong! wrong! The only thing a study will get you is some big dollars into "some" peoples hands who are willing to "bleep" the rest of us little guys over! Grrr
Many so called conservatives seem to support the premise of shifting property ownership to increse tax revenue(or perhaps campaign donations). If a liberal opposes it and the conservative supports it I'll hold my nose and vote liberal.
"Study" means "delay, hoping that the public will cool down and forget about the issue."
