Ohio Police Arrest Woman For $1 In Unpaid Taxes

Unfiled City Tax Forms Also Cited In Case

LOVELAND, Ohio -- An Ohio woman was arrested after she didn't pay just more than $1 that she owed in income taxes, WLWT-TV in Cincinnati reported.

Deborah Combs owed the city of Loveland $1.16 last year, but she also hadn't filed her city income tax forms in five years, the television station said.

She said officers pulled her over and acted as though she were a violent criminal.

"One sheriff approached my car with his hand on his gun," she said. "Another from the other side of the car leaned in and said, 'Are you Deborah Combs?' He said, 'We have a warrant for your arrest.' I was absolutely shocked."

Combs said she thinks the arrest and charges are over-the-top for the amount she owed.

"What they've spent in stamps is more than what I owe," she said.

She could also end up paying hundreds of dollars in fines for the unfiled tax forms, the television station reported.

Loveland City Manager Fred Enderle said the amount Combs owes isn't the real issue.

"Whether it's $1 they owe us or $1,000, it's not fair to the rest of the public to not pursue that person," he said. "There is some expense involved, but it goes back to the principle. We have laws. The laws have to be complied with. At what cost do you stop enforcing the law?"

Combs is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 20.

Except, of course, if you are an illegal immigrant...

Why does this surprise anybody. In just about every part of the country, the two most serious crimes are "intolerance" and "not paying your fair share".

It's a wonder that the cops didn't fire a couple of warning shots into her head.

In my personal experience, state and local tax authorities are a lot more ruthless than the IRS. I've had a lot more trouble with the Georgia Bureau of Revenue than I ever did with the IRS.

"We have laws. The laws have to be complied with. "

What a moron. There are plenty of archane laws on the books, that COULD be enforced. If I were this woman, I'd spend all my free time being sure I made this idiot's life a living hell.

That's pretty much standard procedure...

Damn right she should be arrested. If the city doesn't collect every $1 it can what will the mayor use next time he goes to the nudie bar?

Maybe she could write a letter to Ted Kennedy and ask him to slice off a little of his hooker expense account.

"There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. When there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."

This is an instructive story because it illustrates the truth that the essence of taxation is theft and coercion. All of those socialists who push for higher taxes and greater government spending are individually guilty of and responsible for sending men with guns to terrorize this person, even though they may be too cowardly to handle the guns themselves.

I lived ONE year in Ohio..... it's by far the most pro-government and bureaucratic State I have ever lived in. It's absolutely amazing how real 'big brother' has become in this seemingly charming little mid-western state.....

Living in Connecticut now and believe it or not, CT is far more real and common sense based government than anything I saw in Ohio.

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with." ('Atlas Shrugged' 1957)

I hope she gets a public defender and files appeal after appeal. I'm sure the other taxpayers would applaud that in order to make sure she pays her "Fair Share".

The way I would put it is that this story shows that taxation is a lot about power. This prosecution will obviously be a money-loser for the City. The only reason to do this is to remind everyone who's in charge. There is a similar story in the Washington Post about this poor woman who was prosecuted for drunken driving when she had had one drink and had a very low level of alcohol in her bloodstream. It appears that DC has this absurd law that essentially says that ANY amount of alcohol in the blood can be drunkenness. Hard to tell why the cop arrested the poor woman, but it sounds like she was mouthy and challenged his authority. So the cop had to put her down (how dare she!).

I think if Deb really wants to have fun...just put up one big sign at the entry point of the town...with her picture and a police cruiser in the background...and have the slogan "Don't worry about the criminals...for a $1.16, its the cops you have to worry about." Everyone would be laughing it up for months and the whole city council would eventually be replaced because of the "joke". Its simple to take them to the mat and make them pay long-term. If you figure man-hours here...the cops and the city have spent easily over $250 already messing with the arrest of this woman. This gives you an idea of priorities in this town.
