I don't believe karma. It's a Godless and hideously unfair belief. I do agree with your point that Goldman was innocent while Shapiro's son obviously was engaging in high risk behavior. However, the grief of a parent over the loss of a child will not necessarily be less because the child was not "perfect."
Karma isn't unfair, and that word for the idea might be Godless but the idea itself isn't. "As ye reap so shall ye sow", same idea different religion.
