AJ's behaviour in my eyes was cheating

Cheating is intentionally breaking the rules or the intent of the rules. What rule did AJ break.

The umpire erred in that he made a call he couldn't have possibly seen. He assumed the ball hit the ground.

Players fake out other players all the time. The infielders pretend to catch a ground ball or a relay to trick the runners into slowing down. The pitchers act like they are throwing a fast ball when they throw a change up to fake out the batter. Players and coaches steal signs and motives from opponents all the time. Batters even run to first when the ball comes close to hitting them when it didn't.

Deception and trickery are part of the game. The umpires should not be deceived by these scams and should only make the call that they definitely see. Because well all know what happens when we ass_u_me....

If the Angels really thought that the batter had been called out, and then was allowed to take first, that would be a misapplication of the rules, and grounds for a protest.

That's an interesting perspective. I hadn't thought about it, but I'm not sure it would stand -- especially when the umpire files his report with the league (which he would be required to do if the game had been played under protest) and says he had no intention to give any indication that the batter was out.

I think you confused me with someone else.

AJ's action was a CLASSIC example of a "mind control" player who is aware of everything going on and scraps his team to a win. Cheating? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Its called a "heads-up" play. Any manager would KILL to have 24 players who are that "in it" mentally.

The Angels' catcher, OTOH, was shown to be the greenhorn bushleaguer that he is. If you've ever seen the great catchers play (my favorite one was Thurman Munson), you would have seen that they ALWAYS tag the batter whenever the play (third strike) is close.

The Angels' catcher pulled a MAJOR LEAGUE BONER.

The umpire made the right call, the Angels got faked out by THEIR OWN CATCHER (who wasn't paying attention), and the White Sox exploited the break to win.

Ain't baseball grand??

perhaps the most outrageous call I have ever seen. The angels should be up 2-0 on the overrated white sox. I have changed by status and am now rooting for L.A.

Overrated... yeah that's why they embarrassed the red Sox 3 Games to zero....

That's why the White Sox had the best Record in the American League, and only One game behind the Cardinals for the best record overall.

Yeah, pretty easy to jump on the Angels bandwagon when your team gets spanked.... lol

Enjoy your Winter. :-)

They did embarras the Red Sox. I still cant believe they won. especially a sweep. I am not jumping on any bandwagon. I was going to root for the chisox. But I can not bring myself to root for any team Carl Everett is on. At least I can root for Cabrera in L.A. That said I have watched approx 3 and 1/2 minutes of post season baseball since the Red Sox lost.

They got to play Kansas City 19 times!! Unlike the sox who had to play the yanks and blue jays. Sure the indians made some noise in the second half but they sucked prior to the break. With the pitching staff the White sox have they should have wrapped up with their division in July!

You may not be able to admit it. But you know you should be down 0-2 heading to California! That call was piss poor

The ump raises his arm vertically and makes a fist. That means OUT.

That was the same "mechanic" Edding used for any strike.

I wonder what the veteran catcher who manages the Angels had to say to the third-string catcher who exercised gross negligence by presuming the oucome of a critical close call?

He said he didn't like the call but the Angels should have been able to overcome it (read "make the tag").

Wait a second, how do you get down 0-2. Talk about embellishing. That call would have made it a tie, not a victory for the Angels.

How about the angels 3rd string catcher holding the ball instead of throwing down to second on the steal.

How about Escobar throwing a meatball down the middle to Crede on an 0-2 count.

The Angels still lost that game after the call regardless of what happened.

And we spanked 'em in game three tonight with John Garland going the distance. 5-2.

Oh, and my oldest son's HS freshman football team won tonight against our rival school 22-18. Although the varsity lost.

Wheee..... All in all a pretty good night, I'd say.

Regards,
Joe
