St. Louis to pay to settle homeless suit

ST. LOUIS - The city agreed Wednesday to pay 25 homeless people $80,000 to settle a lawsuit accusing police of harassing and unjustly jailing them to clear downtown over the Fourth of July weekend last year.

"This agreement makes it clear that sweeps violate the law and violate human dignity," said Washington University law professor Steven Gunn, an attorney for the plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs will split $30,000. An additional $20,000 will go toward meals and other services for the homeless. The rest will cover lawyers' fees and costs.

City attorney Patricia Hageman said there was no "conspiracy to remove homeless people from downtown."

"We would hope that people now will put their time and effort into helping the homeless get the housing and services they need to live independently," she said.

How many of these drunks and drug abusers will be dead after they blow that money into their habit? Way to look out for the homeless, Mr. Gunn, I'm sure you did them all a big favor.
