what a spirit of self sacrifice. guess the 80/20 rule is alive and well.
So, what were they afraid of? The inflatable love dolls might be discovered? What?
Weenies.
God, I'm sick of flinching in the face of people like Schmucky Schumer and FatBastard Teddy.
If Bush were going to puss out, the least he could have done was campaign honestly this time last year: "It's all about the judges! So I'll nominate a crony because I'm afraid of Jim Jeffords and Olympia Snowe! Reelect me!"
Follow-up ping on earlier story.
"Have you ever considered that perhaps your preference turned down the nomination or did not pass the vetting? There are those possibilities, you know.

Look what they did to the Perfect Candidate Roberts...why would any self-respecting jurist put him/herself through that.
Reality check: We do have other irons in the fire which needs everyone working together.
Miss Miers is the right stuff for the right time. She will, with the charm of her decent character, pull the nation behind her.
I lift my champaign glass in a toast to the conservative cause. We will win the day with Miss Miers who will truly become the Peoples' Justice on the Bench. She will ensure that the Constitution will protect liberty for our grandchildren's grandchildren. President Bush is willing to sacrifice it all inorder to give this nominee as his gift to the future of freedom. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude.
"Karl Rove told James Dobson that 80% of the potential SCOTUS nominees on the President's list declined his offer because of they didn't want to undergo the grueling confirmation process"
I can understand that, especially given the fecklessness of the current Bush administration. Just look at all the other good conservative nominees Bush screwed when he let the gang of 14 AKA Mod Squad run over him. He gave a powerful signal that he will not stand up for his people.
Gee, this almost makes the Lefties claims of "Karl Rove is President Bush's brain" seem half true.
fyi
Doesn't ring true unless these "nominees" slept through the Roberts confirmation process.
DRUDGE REPORTING TONIGHT:
GOP AIDES JOIN RESISTANCE OVER MIERS NOMINATION
Tue Oct 11 2005 20:52:44 ET
As the White House seeks to rally senators behind the Supreme Court nomination of Harriet E. Miers, lawyers for the Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee are expressing dissatisfaction with the choice and pushing back against her, aides to six of the 10 Republican committee members tell Wednesday's NEW YORK TIMES.
"Everybody is hoping that something will happen on Miers, either that the president would withdraw her or she would realize she is not up to it and pull out while she has some dignity intact," a lawyer to a Republican committee member said.
Developing...
I just cannot understand why Bush followed up the unknown Roberts with a FOB (Friend of Bush) crony named Harried Miers? What ever was he thinking. Geez!
I don't believe this.
Paraphrasing Leno on Harriet Miers
So we're watching a little bit of the Jay Leno show tonight, and SCOTUS came up. Here, roughly, is one of the jokes:
So the rumor is that Bush is going to withdraw Harriet Miers's nomination, and put somebody in her place with more real courtroom experience. Her replacement will be Courtney Love.
I don't believe it. At this point they'll say anything.
Remember the defense made on behalf of Miers, that she was instrumental in getting an army of fine, conservative justices vetted and appointed to the the federal appellate bench? Well, it's bunk.
On Prof Eugene Volokh's blog someone has done some fact-checking and discovered that of the 14 such appointments that have been made since Miers took over the job in February of this year, 11 of them were approved just a few days after she took over the job. And, no, that DOESN'T mean she had anything to do with it. It was far too late for her to do anything meaningful at that point.
It means her timing was impeccable in that she was on watch when someone else's hard work paid off. She was and is basking in the light of reflected glory.
That's been Miers all along. She has amazing timing to be in the right place at the right time, working for the right person.
The RATS are completely and totally to blame for this.
>>>Karl Rove told James Dobson that 80% of the potential SCOTUS nominees on the President's list declined his offer because of they didn't want to undergo the grueling confirmation process.<<<
If that is true, it is likely due to Bush's wimpy-to-non-existent support of the previous candidates he nominated to the federal bench. In fact, the strength of his support for Meirs is unusual, to say the least. He usually lets his nominees hang out to dry.
I'm an attorney in good standing and would love nothing more than to endure grueling confirmation hearings for a chance to sit on the high court. I know for a fact that there are a ton of other fire-breathing, red meat conservative jurists who feel the same way. Are we now to believe that the President and his staff couldn't find ONE such jurist to placate the people that are responsible for his 2004 victory over Kerry? Hell, if you can't find anyone else, put my old law professor Lino Graglia on the court. He'd love to sit through those hearings.
I don't buy it.
The very fact that Dr. Dobson's name has been dragged in the nomination process does not bode well for Counsellor Miers.
We know that when Family Oriented organizations are consulted, the left start to scream bloody murder.
With this new information leaked out ironically, Bush's desire to avoid a protracted, bloody fight will not be realized. I expect more blood to be drawn now than with the Bork or Thomas nomination.
It does not look good for Miers that conservatives are lukewarm to her nomination and the left are now going to go apoplectic upon hearing that Dobson was consulted in the process.
In the end, she will get less vote from the Dems than Roberts did and less votes from the GOP than Roberts did. Whether she can reach the magic 51 number remains to be seen, but it isn't looking good.
