Professor Sparks Protest By Those Defending Their Mexican Rights
The Bryan-College Station Eagle ^ | October 11, 2005 | CRAIG KAPITAN

Roughly 200 people stood in front of the Bush Presidential Conference Center on Monday evening, hoisting pickets and chanting in a mixture of English and Spanish for Harvard professor Samuel Huntington to go home.

The professor was greeted inside the auditorium as he warned of a possible future America split into two dominant cultures, caused in large part by the current flood of Mexican immigrants.

"We've seen a decline in stability in many aspects of American life," he said. "Americans have become very seriously divided over what are called the culture issues."

Huntington, said Monday that America was settled by people who were white, British and Protestant.

The current wave of immigration, which has been going on since 1965 and has been dominated by Mexican immigrants, has been different. Because there have been so many such immigrants - legal and illegal - and they are so near the country they were born in, they have been able to resist assimilation and instead create pockets of the country where their culture dominates, he argued.

"To the Mexicans, the Southwest is their turf, after all," he said. "They feel they have a particular right to be there."

Before the speech, Father Raymond Chavez of Santa Teresa Catholic Church in Bryan stood among dozens of members of his flock as he wore a T-shirt stating "Mexican!" underneath his black jacket. He was joined by various other groups from the A&M campus and surrounding communities.

"We don't agree with him, of course," he said. "We have to defend our Mexican rights, our human rights."

Professor Armando Alonzo, a founding member of the Mexican American Latino Faculty Association and a researcher of Southwest history, took a similar stance.

If they are in America, or are Americans, why do they have "Mexican Rights"?

What a missed opportunity for ICE. They need to start showing up to these protest rallies with paddy wagons to detain and deport all of these illegals.

The US can sustain and survive legal immigration from Mexico within reason. What it cannot do is take in the entire country from there or anywhere else. Immigration succeeded in the past because of required assimilation and Huntington is correct, that's not happening today due in large part to the government-sanctioned illegal flood.

Of course you do, so go to back to Mexico and do so. Of course, protesting there could get you killed by the authorities.

I agree. I graduated from A&M in '78. Moved back to the area just a few months ago - I am amazed at the change since. One of the biggest changes is the fact of the numbers of Hispanics living in the area - many of whom I suspect are illegals. Also, there is an upsurge in crime that is reported in the local newspaper - often linked to the illegals.

This "Father" is one of the problems:

"Father Raymond Chavez of Santa Teresa Catholic Church in Bryan stood among dozens of members of his flock as he wore a T-shirt stating "Mexican!"

The Mexico native said it wasn't difficult to rally his parishioners - many of whom are immigrants themselves - to attend the protest.

"We don't agree with him, of course," he said. "We have to defend our Mexican rights, our human rights."

I'm sick of Mexican illegals and I'm sick of Bush allowing this invasion.

If the elites are looking for a civil war..they will not have to look much farther..or longer..IMO

The splitting of America from one strong national identity into two already is starting to show the signs of a developing backlash, he said In fact, California's rise in its Hispanic population is similar to the change of power from the Serbs to the Muslims in Bosnia in the 1990s, which eventually led to extermination camps, he argued. While there's probably almost no chance that would happen in California, there's also little chance there won't be any backlash at all, he said.

I'm guessing the reporter mangled Huntington's remarks here, but did at least grasp his essential point: the American Southwest is heading for a violent breakup.

I think it is hilarious that Mexicans think the southwest is their territory. I say we give the southwest back to the original inhabitants the Apaches and the Comanches. We then give the Comanches and the Apaches the best tanks and guns and see if the Mexicans still want their territory.

Of course, they want to do that in the United States. This invasion is nothing but a money grab. They care nothing of Mexico or else they would be there making a better of it. They just want to plunder our wealth.

You make an excellent point! I am a fan of Texas history - I recall reading of devastating raids made by the Comanches, etc into Mexico where they would pillage rancheros, villages, etc to obtain horses and other loot.
In fact, in one story, the Comanches reported going so deep into Mexico, they reported seeing "little people in the trees." Evidently they had seen monkeys in southern Mexico.

The Mexican military was helpless.

If they want their "Mexican Rights", let them go back to MEXICO to exercise them. If they are here illegally, then we don't want them any way.

Well I live in California and I say let em have it. The illegals and the liberal legislature here has ruined the state anyway. Let the federal government buy my house, pay me to leave and I will be out of here. Would probably be cheaper for them in the long run anyway.

Saw the article on the front page of the Eagle this morning. Check out the accompanying picture:

Protest at TAMU

One guy is holding a sign saying, "You're standing on stolen land." Stolen from who? From Mexico, which stole it from the previous inhabitants?

I'm going to play devils advocate:

Sir, please articulate your probable cause for arresting these folks at this rally?

Anything that looks, smells or even resembles profiling will get your case thrown out.
