A man held in connection with the disappearance of Virginia Commonwealth University student Taylor Behl, already facing 16 child pornography charges, has now been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Ben Fawley, 38, an amateur photographer who admitted to having a sexual relationship with the 17-year-old Behl, "was in possession of firearms prior to Taylor being reported missing," police said.

"I knew he was from PA, but had assumed it was from western PA because of the OH vehicle plates. This is a beautiful little town north of Philly. "

nowhere is safe. I grew up in a smallish town on the PA/OH border. One day a cub scout was cutting through the woods to go to his scout meeting and a couple psychotic lunatics captured him and roasted him over a fire, among other things. They fried several years later.

I doubt they fried in the same cruel way as their victim unfortunately.

You're probably very close. What's the deal with young women jumping in the sack with a virtual stranger? Maybe mommy and daddy need to stay in dorms with their kids until they're lined out but then someone would have them staying in barracks with their 17-18 yr. old soldiers, "Yoo-hoo, Mr. Drill Sergeant, I think you're being mean! Honey, hold up your stress card so he can see it."

Sheesh! BTW, "amature photographer" probably means "wanna be" or "unemployed".

In the US, even if he's not served his time, he'll be on the street.

The details still make me nauseous twenty years later. I was going to type them but there is a literal chance that someone might vomit on their computer, so I won't.

It sounds horrific. I sometimes think we should hear, see, and understand the cold hard facts of cases like these, but I understand your decorum.

It's eerily like that girl in Aruba going out all night to party with three wierdos. It must be hard to raise a daughter these days and give her a steady foundation of self.

"Steady foundation of self" isn't what's lacking. "Coherent and abiding sense of right and wrong" is what's lacking.

Parents are unwilling to tell their daughters (and sons) "no," "don't you dare," and "that's absolutely WRONG," and "do that and I will make you pay dearly". They're unwilling to tell them that because they don't know the difference between being a parent and pal (but even a quality friend doesn't let a friend do some of this stuff). Plus, many of them are moral ignoramuses who believe idiocy like "all teenagers have sex anyway, just tell her to use protection and she can go ahead and sleep with her boyfriend ... and if he's a 38yo pervert, well, who are we to judge?"

Sometimes my younger kids get mad at me and say things like "you're not my friend"! By the time they're 8 or so, they know that will earn them the swift retort, "You're darn right I'm not your friend; I'm your father, and don't you EVER forget that!"

>>>What the heck is the matter with parents who would let their 17 yo daughter run around with a 38 yo man?? Are they insane, or just incredibly stupid?>>>

Why are you assuming they knew, it says in the article that they kept it a secret.

ARE YOU SAYING THAT TAYLOR DESERVED WHAT SHE GOT?!! OR THAT IT'S HER PARENTS' FAULT?!! YOU PEOPLE ARE LIKE THE TALIBAN!!!

Just giving you the usual spiel from the permissive losers who populate these boards.

A 17 year old girl should know better than to get involved with a loser as creepy as her murderer.

Sleeping with an unemployed 38 year old man who spends all his time hanging around teenage girls while taking drugs and living off a disability check is just horrible, horrible judgment.

Any FReeper with a teenage daughter should hammer home the dangers of dealing with strange men.

LOL, yes, I've used that myself. My daughters have told me I'm a big meany (which gets them punished for disrespect of the big meany). I reply that I am THE big meany and we have plenty of time to be friends when they graduate college. Mom is mom right now.

Yes, I regularly use other children's bad judgement as an example for my own children. That does not make it this girls fault, but we do place ourselves in dangerous situations. If I, a white female in a new car, go into a crack neighborhood at midnight on Friday, does alleviate me from any wrongdoing? Poor judgement has been the regret of many.

I do not intend to let my 17 yr old go to a dorm in college myself. I do not know a 17 yr old capable of making those adult choices. Even one as sweet and innocent as this Taylor APPEARED to be. She was hanging out with skater druggy losers and unemployed perverts. I've told my children they will live at home the first year and then transfer to a University. Nothing wrong with getting first year credits from the state college.

I note she also had a pierced nose.

I will not tolerate any of that body-piercing, tattooing crap from my kids.

I'm sure I'll get a post from someone who claims to be a successful financial executive with his nipples chained to his lower lip and "DIRTY F***ER" tattooed in green across his forehead, but all the teens in my neighborhood who were working summer jobs and doing career-building internships were groomed like normal humans and all the lazy loser teens hanging out in the 7-11 and WaWa parking lots were covered in piercings, tattoos, etc.

It seems that Taylor came from a broken home - I notice that kids from such homes are often encouraged in self-destructive behavior by parents who want to be perceived as the "buddy" parent in contrast with their ex-spouse.

I sense that this poor girl didn't receive the guidance she needed and she was caught in a permissive upbringing and an education which taught her to have the liberal attitude that everyone who is different (like 38 year old unemployed loser chickenhawks) should just be accepted unjudgmentally.

If they didn't know, they should have. A 17yo is a minor child. Where they go and what they do and whom they do it with is subject to parental permission. I believe she was involved with this nutcase well before she went off to college, anyway, wasn't she?

did you not follow this story at all.
The parents had no clue she was seeing this scumbag.
She was also over 100 miles away at school.......
jeez blame the parents,

I have no idea who my daughter is seeing while 200 miles away.
I hope she has the good sense we raised her with, but I am not there to see......

Yes, exactly! My mother (God love her) fell for the 60/70's crap of "everyone is fundamentally good if you give them a chance". Her mother was VERY judgemental and my father had a friend who was an ex-con. He made a bad choice at 17 and changed his life through Christ. So my mother assumed that HER mother was wrong about him, so her whole entire mindset must be wrong. That does not mean that every ex-con is all sweet and candy. Unfortunately, she brought me up with that attitude of "all monsters need are hugs to be good". That was the WRONG thing to teach a child and she also married a monster, to my cost. She learned at 40 that just because someone is NICE doesn't mean they are GOOD. That is a mantra I use with my children. Just because someone acts NICE does NOT mean they are GOOD. I made some foolish choices in my teen/young adult years that I have paid for, but learned the hard way and intend on teaching my children different.

Her parents had no idea about her relationship with Fawley. I think both parents may have met him and been under the impression that he was a platonic friend of Taylor's. I recall her father saying he had no idea that Fawley was 38--he thought he was in his 20s. That would have been my guess too, he really does look a lot younger than he is.

Or at least he did. Maybe prison will fix that.

Good for you. I made some pretty horrendous mistakes when I was my daughter's age and she knows it. So when I got the inevitable "you're a hypocrite," I told her that she could choose to look at me and at imperfect people like that, but I didn't see what that bought her. It's the last time I heard that argument. We have to acknowledge our own human frailty and sinfulness and then not be cowed by it. Raising kids can certainly be tough. It's hard to look in that parent mirror!
