This sexism charge is beyond stoo-pid, is utter nonsense and insulting.

If JRB, Owens, or even Edith Clement would have been selected there wouldn't be a peep of opposition from the right. Well maybe a bit with Clement but that's irrelevant now.

The whole defense of Miers is beyond stupid and insulting. This whole debate is so intellectually dishonest. It is not about elitism or about sexism or about any other kind of bigotry. It is all about if Miers will rule like a conservative and in her 60 year carreer, Harriet Miers has given no indication that she would. Harriet has every appearance of being a moderate, albiet a conservative leaning moderate. Real conservatives have real reasons to be disappointed, and until the defenders can acknowledge that honestly they will get nowhere.

I agree, totally. When Sandra Day O'Conner was chosen, years ago, (like her views or not), nobody questioned that she was, and is, a qualified candidate and an intellectual.

My experience has been that women who are qualified and competent never have to worry about men or other qualified, competent women whining about "sexism". It's just the unqualified whiners who need some kind of excuse to get an advantage.

Laura disappointed here. That attitude is just SOOOOOO teachers union!

This is a bit over the top, no? Laura Bush didn't SAY it was sexism: she was asked by a reporter and then simply responded by saying it was possible. The question was dumb, as there's no way to answer it, since no one can guarantee that it ISN'T sexism, either. Perhaps the best answer would be an "I certainly hope not," but it's not as though Mrs Bush is making the allegation in her response
