Laura Bush says sexism possible in Miers criticism

COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.

"That's possible, I think that's possible," Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC's "Today Show" whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers' accomplishments as a lawyer were a role model to young women.

...

Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.

"I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she's broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country," she said.

Very true. We were discussing sexism NOT intellectualism and I never said or thought that Roberts was an intellectual lightweight.

If conservatives were truly sexist, they would not have preferred Rogers-Brown over Roberts. Obviously, they care most about philososphy and qualifications. Sex is NOT a consideration.

You are also abundantly full of crap, and must be sitting in remote location to not see what is happening. You are taking the liberal press as gospel, and that is just what they want you to do.

If you think that 100% of conservatives are not sexist or not opposed to Miers' nomination, the boldfaced lie comes from your corner.

Amazing who passes for a "moonbat" now: most FReepers, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Charles Krauthammer, George Will, John Fund, Robert Bork, Senator Brownback, the National Review, ad infinitum.

If that were true we would be hearing such comments on talk radio and on the internet. I have not run into conservatives in my persoanl life who have made such comments and I frankly don't believe you have either, particularly to the degree you mentnion.

Some were taking issue with Laura Bush's charge of sexism. I think that the article was clear that she responded with the charge BECAUSE the Miers' critics were calling her an intellectual lightweight.

No matter what you think of the woman, she isn't an airhead, and the charge that she lacks intellectual heft is based on something other than the facts of her life.

Sexism would be one good explanation of the critics' irrational charges. There are probably others.

"Sure has. Makes me feel real good to know that Laura and the Dynamo from Dundalk think alike!"

I think a lot of the arguments now being floated to support Miers cut both ways. The bit with Dobson and the others that she's OK because because she's an evangelical worries me. Is this a religious test of the kind we slammed Durbin over? These are strange days.

IMHO MOST Conservatives who oppose Miers do NOT oppose her on gender grounds (and I am supporting her nomination). However, there have been very sexist comments made about Miers that are inexcusable and do not speak well of the people who make them.

I suspect that some of the knuckleheads attacking Miers on gender grounds probably also oppose her for reasons other than gender. By making bigoted remarks, these people weaken the arguments against Miers and will help get her confirmed.

Therefore, I would classify them in one sense as useful idiots -- except that I despise bigotry and it does nobody any good to spew that garbage. We're all better than that -- this isn't DU.

Thanks for your #4. I keep saying it doesn't take a rocket scientist to make a good Jurist. All it takes is honesty, and a sense of fairness, the ability to think logically, and to express one's thoughts in a clear and concise manner.

Those that claim otherwise are high on themselves.

So now you can read not only my mind, but also possess the ability to listen in on every personal conversation?

Have you ever been south of the Mason-Dixon Line? There are people out here in the South that just don't think like you and I. Believe me, they are both conservative and sexist and have no problem saying so. Okay?

When I read statements like yours, I am reminded why the local people refer to both "Yankees" and "DAMN YANKEES".

Incidentally, President Bush carried our state of North Carolina. Did he carry your state of Pennsylvania? You must be hanging around with pseudo-conservatives.

In comparison to other proven conservatives who are SC conddates, her qualifications are lacking. If shewere male the same charges would have been made.

Unless the pin is of the English flag, worn by an employee of an English prison.

Then it is banned because it's offensive to Muslim prisoners.
