COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.
"That's possible, I think that's possible," Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC's "Today Show" whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers' accomplishments as a lawyer were a role model to young women.
...
Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.
"I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she's broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country," she said.
When a GOP president and his wife start alleging that conservative critics of a nominee are sexist, you know that they have blown it. I love Laura. We have her autographed 8x10 in the hallway. But this is a stuck on stupid comment.
You are hitting a brick wall. It is not only possible, but I have actually heard people SAY that they are opposed because Miers is a woman. I agree that this is a stupid thing for them to say, but it is being said. I think you are so defensive that you are overlooking that nothing is 100%. That means it is possible. I am quite awake, incidentally.
It's not confusing to me, but it is quite silly. If you think that charges of sexism from Laura Bush are gonna keep Dems from opposing Miers, then you're delusional.
That's nice ... and besides not having prior judicial exp, in what OTHER ways are Miers equally qualified as Marshall?
If no prior judicial exp is a sufficient qualification onto itself, how about me for the SC?

Damn you, I saw the title and was about to post the same thing till I saw you had already said it.
Ditto that!
So, in short, you don't believe Laura Bush's contention that Miers' detractors are sexist.
Thanks for answering honestly.
I can't argue with you there, Don't Mess w/Texas.
I didn't hear Laura Bush specify FreeRepublic is guilty of sexism. There are lots of critics of Miers who don't frequent this forum. And many of them are sexist.
Fair enough.
But are they "sexist" simply because they oppose Miers?
L Bush's implications were clear...oppose Miers, you're a sexist.
A role model for young women around the country? This is liberal PC-speak. Pathetic.
Guess so. Splitting the base so the Dems can take over in 2006 sure does make him a "uniter" I suppose.
There are different forms of sexism; one form would reject any woman because she is a woman. Very few conservatives share that mentality, despite liberal stereotypes to the contrary. But there is another form of sexism - or maybe that's not even the right word - which insists that a woman project kind of an aggressive, male image in order to be taken seriously. And I think something like that is at work here in the Miers case.
In fact, I'd bet at least one Dem will explain his/her vote against confirmation something like this: "Although sexism might play a part in why some of my 'friends' across the aisle object to Ms. Miers, my own concerns are [blah, blah, blah, blah]. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience vote to confirm a nominee who might roll back [blah, blah, blah], take us back to [blah, blah, blah], and erode the civil liberties that [blah, blah, blah, blah]."
Well, in fairness to the First Lady, she wasn't the instigator of the charge, and didn't outright endorse it. Still, it is a ridiculous thing to have been asked and she should have said so - I doubt most of those objecting to Miers (on the right) would be upset had someone like Edith Jones or Janice Brown been nominated.
Elitism ("she's not an ivy leaguer", "not pretty enough" etc.) is more of what I've seen (from some).
Thank you.
Please! All Laura Bush said is that it is "possible" that some criticism could be sexist. All of you who are trying to make this an issue are barking up the wrong tree. I'm beginning to think there must be some other hidden agenda with these arguments being steered in the wrong direction.
