Laura Bush says sexism possible in Miers criticism

COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.

"That's possible, I think that's possible," Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC's "Today Show" whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers' accomplishments as a lawyer were a role model to young women.

...

Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.

"I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she's broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country," she said.

Thanks for confirming my original point.

You are welcome.

BTW, did I say that the purple lips were attractive? What shade is that, is there a name for it?

Laura is a nice lady in many ways, but we know she is on record saying she would not want to see Roe overturned.

It seems as though ad hominem attacks are all that your "side" has left.

Back to my original post #1...my point is again proven.

"While I think Meirs deserves a chance to at least have her day with the Senate, Laura Bush doesn't help her cause by calling Ms. Meirs critics sexist. I expect that from the Nancy Pelosis, Barbara Boxers and Hitlerys of the left, not the First Lady."

Funny thing. Everyone is up in arms about what Mrs. Bush said. Yet how do you think Ms. Miers feels about all this criticism and no one has even spoken to her yet?

Coulter called Miers mediocre at best. Has she spoken with Miers? What about Krauthammer, Limbaugh and the rest of the "Right Wing" pundits? Only Hannity has taken a wait and see attitude towards Miers.

The treatment Miers is getting from the right is uncalled for at best and disgraceful to say the least. As Conservatives, we hold ourselves to a higher standard and in one fell swoop, we have sunk lower than the RATS.

She's just doin' her part.

If she is the one who pushed for Miers, that tells us more than anything. Maybe the President should have told us, "Trust Laura."

I wouldn't be surprised to hear Pelosi et al. pick up Laura's words and use them against conservatives. I think the leftist jerk Mikulski has already done that. I didn't like Hillary getting involved in political matters. I don't like Laura Bush doing it either.

Laura Bush is checkmating the Dems. Some will see this; others won't.

"Harriet Miers ran the Texas Lottery Commission."

I can remember the time when evangelicals thought gambling was a sin.

I suppose Miers found nothing wrong with gambling.

The fact that the president nominated his own counsel (who has neither a verifiable track record nor a conservative jdicial philosophy) is the issue that is worrying. Don't forget - Miers has a lukewarm attitude (at best) towards the Federalist Society. She has always been a supporter of the liberal ABA.

Despite all this, you still think "The treatment Miers is getting from the right is uncalled for at best and disgraceful to say the least." WOW!!!! You don't hold the conservative rank and file to a high standard, do you?

"GW's choice here may be one of his wisest decisions, but then again, it could be one of his worst!"

But we will never find out because the Right wing of the Republican Party doesn't want a pro-life, Christian, Business law expert who is a woman on the bench. Especially one who will be a strict constructionist.

Apparently the Right wants someone who will make the RATS fume. Yet they still haven't told us where they will get the votes to overcome a guaranteed filibuster from the left.

Bush is playing chess. Either the Miers pick is a setup and the Right are playing along with the President or they just want to self destruct and give it all to the RATS in 06 and 08 as long as they protect their base and political contributions.

Hmmm... Change the right to left and there really is no difference now is there?

Wow.

I certainly wouldn't have expected the First Lady to resort to leftist tactics such as these. How disappointing.

Oh...I see. Laura Bush is checkmating the Dems by bashing the people who elected her husband to power? An intersting but a totally confusing point.

I'm generally one of the last to cry "sexism," but I think it's true in this case. And this is NOT because Miers is a woman, but because of how she LOOKS, i.e., kind of domestic and grandmotherly, like someone who would bake cookies and take care of the grandchildren while the parents see a movie. In other words, she projects the IMAGE of a traditional, domestic, non-professional woman, and people are reacting to that image.

Yeah, and the "Marshall Court" was guilty of the first (and biggest) usurpation of power by the Court, aggragating to themselves the "right" to unilaterally overrule Congress.

Imagine how it would be today if Marshall had set the precedent of pointing out to Congress that no authority existed in the Constitution for an action taken, and SUGGESTING THAT THEY AMEND THE CONSTITUTION TO CORRECT THE SHORTCOMING.
