HOUSTON -- He was a country boy who grew up on a wheat farm, she a city girl who played on her high school tennis team.
The lives of Nathan Hecht and Harriet Miers began to inter-twine in the early 1970s, shortly after they finished law school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Soon, they were rising stars at the same law firm, and their lives seemed to converge in every way. They were earnest, ambitious and increasingly affectionate with one another. Friends thought they would get married.
Instead, for 30 years, Hecht and Miers--President Bush's Supreme Court nominee--have nurtured a kinship that has entranced and confounded their closest friends. They are traditional conservatives content in a modern, non-traditional relationship, one that leaves plenty of time for their true love, their work, to take center stage.
Romantic at times, the relationship has played an important role in their ascendance to power--she as White House counsel, he to the Texas Supreme Court, where he has served as a justice for 15 years.
"I think they thought seriously about getting married," said Dallas commercial litigation attorney Brady Sparks, a friend of both of them. "They both decided that it just wasn't in the cards for the agenda they both wanted, and that was to do about three lifetimes worth of work in one lifetime."

We are good, close friends," he said Friday. "And we have been for all these years. ... We are not dating. We are not seeing each other romantically. Not currently."

This is great news, because, as you know, there is no connection between sex and politics.

Wheeeewwwwwww!
You had me worried, for a minute there I thought you meant Anne Heche!~}
Is anyone getting tired of Ms. Miers' one-time squeeze?
No, that bombshell will come out after Miers is confirmed.
Miers == OPRAH .... Hecht == Stedman?
Yeah, sure... whatever...
Oh yeah, this seals it, she's too normal for marriage and kids, instead devoted to changing the world through politics and lip flapping. Now I'm convinced, best candidate out there.
This is just puke. So Oprah. So Dr. Phil. So, so, daytime tv.
I know a few women who are highly qualified, and jurists to boot!
I'm going back to my swamp and staying there through 2008.
This explains why one of the few public defenders for Miers is this guy. I did not know they were boyfriend-girlfriend (or 'not currently' - whatever that means). This is all pathetic and shame on the White House for picking this woman. When Lindsey Graham and Miers old boyfriend are the strongest backers of this woman it should set off some alarm bells for everybody - she isn't the best pick for the People's Court let alone Supreme Court.
Nathan Hecht of Dallas has long been considered the most conservative member of the Texas Supreme Court, particularly after Governor Perry worked so hard to defeat the conservative justice Steven Wayne Smith of Austin in the 2004 Republican primary.
