SAF DEMANDS ANSWERS FOR GUN BAN AT FEMA RELIEF CENTER OUTSIDE BATON ROUGE
Second Amendment Foundation ^ | October 7, 2005 | SAF

BELLEVUE, WA – The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) today expressed shock and disbelief that authorities are continuing to target firearms held by private citizens who are now seeking refuge at a relief center outside Baker, Louisiana, a bedroom community near Baton Rouge.

According to a report that aired on the Lehrer News Hour on Thursday, displaced New Orleans residents are being allowed to move into a compound called “FEMA City,” where trailers and RVs have been assembled to provide temporary housing. Among the conditions for being allowed to move in – and the only one detailed by Baker Mayor Harold Rideau – is that no firearms are allowed. The compound was established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), hence its nickname.

“This is not acceptable,” said SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb, “especially after the lawsuit that we, and the National Rifle Association, filed recently in New Orleans that secured a temporary restraining order against the confiscation of firearms by police in that city and in nearby St. Tammany Parish.

“It doesn’t matter whether this refuge community is behind a gate, or whether it is patrolled by police and security guards,” Gottlieb continued. “This restriction appears to be illegal under Louisiana law and the state constitution, as well as under a federal court ruling some years ago that protected firearms owned by residents in a federal public housing facility in another state.

“We are making inquiries about this restriction, and who ordered it,” Gottlieb said. “When we find out, whether it is an order that came from local authorities, or from FEMA, when we establish who gave that order, we are going to pursue legal action.

“Being the victim of a natural disaster does not require a citizen to surrender his or her civil rights, and that includes firearms rights and property rights,” Gottlieb stated. “The anti-gun attitude that seems to be growing out of Louisiana’s disaster had better change, or we’re going to change it in court.”

The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nations oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 600,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. SAF has previously funded successful firearms-related suits against the cities of Los Angeles; New Haven, CT; and San Francisco on behalf of American gun owners, a lawsuit against the cities suing gun makers and an amicus brief and fund for the Emerson case holding the Second Amendment as an individual right.

The gun grabbers never even pause let alone stop their illegal pursuit.

They will be able to get just about any kind of gun they want in Scotlandville which is right next door to "FEMA CITY". The gunrunners there are frothing at the thought.

Evidently guns offend the sensibilities of the folks.

I remember Gen. Honore barking at the national guard soldiers to point their guns downward or slung over the shoulders towards their back.

I understand his position.
If you ever see me actually pointing my gun at you, that is the last sight you should expect to see.
If anyone ever levels a weapon on me, they best be firing it immediately.
I may not be a quick draw, but I am proficient in hitting my intended target.

The lawlessness present in NO was well documented.

There were thugs roaming the streets with rifles.

Would you be confortable arriving on that scene with your gun NOT at the ready?

Sometimes a well aimed gun is quite the message. I certainly hope you don't shoot first and ask questions second in all situations.

Ain't likely that anyone besides you and me, will alarm on this. We seem to be stuck with a whole bunch of "Republicans", not knowing just what "republican" means.
Clue is, republican don't have diddly crap, to do with your bottom line, Republican means individual liberty, nothing more, nothing less.
"Republican" should not be a path to wealth, "Republican" must be a commitment to liberty!

Fascinating. A more reasonable condition would be a mandatory firearm training class, involving safety and use of firearms, and at least one firearm in the dwelling at all times.

My unseen gun in my unseen holster is "ready".
A uniformed military member openly carrying a weapon, is "ready".
Pointing a weapon directly at someone is a direct threat.
Do not pretend to "threaten" people with lethal force. Unless you are actually prepared to shoot and be shot.
Never level a weapon on anyone you do not fully intend to shoot to kill.
Gen. Honore was correct in correcting his troops.
The USA DOD is not a civilian police force.
I am not alone in watching in horror as they are re-directed towards missions civilians seem incapable of conducting for themselves.
To my knowledge, Federal Martial law was never declared in Louisianna.

The only thing the goons in NO respect is superior force.

That is my last word on this topic.
