The music is part of a package (strategy). You know, they get the design in place, the corporate image, project a certain "style" on previous products, etc. etc.
Most people today don't even know where the Apple logo comes from or where the graphical interface originated, but the company has an "image" among its loyal users. They wanted to be associated with something slightly countercultural.

If you read some of my prior comments, you would know that as a drummer, I like and NEED a good bass player to play effectively. Music sounds so much better when the bass and drums are together. I know, I was just kidding around...Drummers and bass players are the butt of wquite a few jokes...I think it's jealousy, myself.... :o)
