'I have always striven to be your full-service column-writer. For example, for readers who are not as immersed in the news as we copy editors, I have written helpful summary guides covering clowns such as Cindy ("Warmonger!") Sheehan and Joe ("Spy Leak!") Wilson.
Then, two weeks ago, I described how to feed yourself until next February on just $400 by producing a Big Blue Bucket of Meat.
Therefore, you should not be surprised that today I'm offering even more valuable information. I want to tell you how to beat the price of gas. The answer is simple: the motor scooter.
If you are willing to deal with minor inconveniences, such as the risk of early death, then you too can save $100 a month. And you can have a lot of fun at the same time. After a stressy day at work, zipping home under the sun is like morphine on two wheels. Not that I know about morphine. Just saying.
I still have my car. Don't give up yours. The scooter is no fun in a thunderstorm. And it's difficult to stuff 94 pounds of Sam's Club meat into the rear storage box.
So the scooter is a complement to your car, not a replacement. As long as you understand this parameter, you are ready to go.
I got my scooter in May at the local franchise of a national car-parts chain. It's the generic, Chinese type. I suspect that basically it is the $1,900 Honda Metropolitan, but made on the cheap. It cost $1,000. Sales tax and plates were about $200 more.........

Here's another funny one: http://www.starnewspapers.com/star/spedit/col/25-col1.htm
I just bought myself a Yamaha Vino 125 and I love it. Seats two, tops out at 90 km/h and has enough trunk space for groceries or a weekend away. Best part though is the cost- $4 worth of gas to go more than 200km and $500 to insure a new driver for a full year.
Vroom, wroom!
Is this guy talking about the alcocycles? That's what people around here drive when they are no longer allowed to have a license.
I understand the "risk of early death" thing. On my way to work, early this week, I drove past the scene of an extrememly recent accident (about a minute prior to my arriving). It involved a large super-duty p/u truck and a Suzuki scooter. My wife is trying to get her deposit back on the scooter she was purchasing.
Old saying: Motor scooters (Mopeds) are like fat chicks...
Ugh, what's a km/h and a km? $500 for a years worth of insurance seems pretty steep. I'd shop around. My big bike insurance got jacked up to $75 a year and I was really torqued off about that.
$500 for insurance ~ it only costs $300 @ year full coverage for a Suzuki SV650 motorcycle.
Trunk space?
If you're going to take the risk of being on two wheels in the first place, I opt for a motorcycle that has the acceleration to get out of dangerous spots and the heavier brakes.
What was the price tag on the Yamaha, if you dont' mind saying.
A friend of mine makes artificial limbs. I think is business is about to increase.
There is risk in everything we do in life.
What say you? ;);)
500 HP V-10
Small mass, large mass collision, the small mass always the loser. I gave up my motorcycles because I had no control over idiotic actions of larger vehicle operators.
"I understand the risk of early death.."No protection at all on scooters or even full size bikes for that matter.Even when the accident is not fatal to the biker, the injuries are very often very serious.Injuries often result in paralysis and/or permanant/severe brain damage.
