Pakistan - Quake death toll in Pakistani Kashmir estimated at 30,000
Agence France-Presse | October 9, 2005

ISLAMABAD--An estimated 30,000 people were killed in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir by a massive earthquake, the region's Minister for Works and Communication Tariq Farooq told Agence France-Presse Sunday.

"Our rough estimates say more than 30,000 people have died in the earthquake in Kashmir," he said. Pakistan's military said earlier that at least 18,000 died in the 7.6 magnitude quake that hit Saturday.

"There are cities, there are towns which have been completely destroyed. Muzaffarabad is devastated," he added, referring to the capital of Pakistan's sector of disputed Kashmir.

It would not surprise me... the quake in Iran a couple of years back had a toll of around 80,000 I believe...

they don't have the same building safety requirements that we do here... I guess bureaucracy and regulations can be good for somethings.

It will be interesting to see if Pakistan rushes any aid to Kashmir, or will that area be more or less forgotten in the rush to take care of their own people.

Reports on CNN (I know, I know) featured a Pakistani Presidential spokesman requesting heavy transport helicopters from any source. He was specifically asked about American helicopters from Afghanistan, but did not know if any have arrived from there yet.

I wonder if Osama and buddies will consider this Allah's Punishment to Islam since they were quick to claim Katrina was America's punishment.

And will this flush out Bin Ladin? Or perhaps he is one of the casualties? One could only help.

You don't want your taxes raised so we can dump raw cash over the rubble from a B-52?

Hate monger.

I hope we do send helicoptors. We can genuinley send in our best search and rescure guys to do good, find and help injured etc., but if we send thousands of people to assist it may be in our interests to slip in a couple of hundred CIA types amongst them to have a less restricted look round that afghan/pakistan border than would normally be the case. A win/win mission.

This earthquake occurred over a large area, which included significant populated areas, so the number of casualties could well be that much and more.

The New Orleans mayor was clearly exaggerating things just to make President Bush look bad. There there was a lot of warning, and even afterwards people could be rescued. In an earthquake there is no warning, people can't escape and run away.
