Harkin to the defense
Powerline ^ | 10/08/05 | Scott

Posted on 10/08/2005 6:56:55 PM PDT by jdhljc169

ABC reports: "Senate Dems defend Miers on top court nod." Both Senators Harkin and Mikulski, quoted in the AP story, were among the 22 Democrats voting against Judge Roberts's confirmation as Chief Justice. I wonder if the conservative supporters of Harriet Meiers have any thoughts regarding what, if anything, Tom Harkin and Barbara Mikulski know about Harriet Miers that they don't? Have Harkin and Mikulski perhaps grown in office over the past couple weeks? Or do Ms. Meier's conservative critics deserve credit for drawing Harkin and Mikulski to the cause?

Harkin has undoutedly grown. This no doubt strengthens her position as a true originalist and conservative. This allays all of my concerns about Harriet. </sarcasm>

The Dems strategy is just to rile up the conservative base now. They don't have a clue whether or not they'll let her through.

A lot of the dem support for Miers may be knee jerk, given so many of the pubs they hate don't want Miers...plain old reflex going on here I suspect.

It will be real interesting if, during the hearings, Miers says things that the dems don't like....will be real hard to back track but they will anyway.

I saw last week that Harkin was sorta supporting this nomination. It's all part of the liberal dem plan to split and PO conservatives. Harkin is one of the biggest rat, slimy liberals in the Senate. Barf.

I can't wait for the hearings myself.

The speculation is over the top with this one.

Harkin and Mikulski know that there appear to be some Republicans with their panties in a twist about this. They figure if those people oppose her, supporting her must be a good thing. They assume you know something they don't. So it's perfectly in keeping with the classic Democratic reactive position.

The funny think about this is that the people who know the most about her all seem to see her differently than you guys and those Dems.

No. I think they know more about her views than they have chosen to share.

Ted Kennedy could campaign for Miers and Bushites would see nothing amiss.

Any ideas?

That Miers privately assured them that she only joined a church because it looked damn good on the resume and she could sniff the conservative winds ablowing in Texas?

Hey don't look at me...anything is possible.

They don't have a clue whether or not they'll let her through.

Of course they'll let her through. The alternative is a McConnell, a Luttig, or a Rogers-Brown. And they definitely don't want to run the risk of having one of those heavyweights making it on to the Court. A Rogers-Brown nomination battle would be particularly damaging to the reelection fortunes of no fewer than three Democratic senators next year.

Give me a break, they know as little about her as we do. Their support is nothing but misinformation.

My guess is Miers was on a short list of people that the RATs "guaranteed" would not be filibustered.

GWB was probably thrilled with this since she is a personal friend, and a devout Christian. He likely looked at it as a safe, but brilliant, pick in that he got to name a staunch conservative that the RATs would actually support.

He underestimated the amount of mistrust he would face from his conservative base, however. I am a skeptic myself, but I have read enough positive thinsg about her that I am willing to give her a chance.
