October 8, 2005 -- The City Council Education Committee yesterday paved the way for a new bill requiring the city to translate report cards and other school-related documents into nine languages. The Department of Education already translates many documents into Spanish, Russian and Chinese and is aiming to provide services in six other languages through an expanded translation unit this fall.
But supporters of the bill said the department's efforts do not go far enough.
Councilman Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens), lead sponsor of the bill known as the "Education Equity Act," said the measure attempts "to engage parents who may not be as involved in their children's education as they would like."
The lone opposition on the panel, Andrew Lanza (R-S.I.), called the bill a waste of taxpayer money that sends the message that learning English is not important.

I doubt some Korean American who watched his parents work 70 hours a week in a dry cleaner so he could go to Penn State is going to feel too much sympathy for the Jesse followers.
Accurate comment. What about Bo and Luke though? Weren't they okay?
YIKES........
Here in Accomac County I am only aware of there being Spanish translation available in the schools.
That's not future history. That's now.
And I will tell you that the animosity (jealousy) is already there and has been there for at least the last decade.
This is nothing, I used to work with a school sortware company, and one of the contracts called for generation of letters to parents in 26 languages!
We should count it as fortunate that English is still on the list.
My maternal grandparents were both Swedish immigrants. My mother tells me that Swedish was never spoken in her home. She claims my grandparents always said, "We are in America, so we speak English!"
I never asked, but I'm sure they enforced the "This is America" rule on my grandfather, since he ended-up in an Ivy League college.
I would type something catchy but my head fell unto my keyboard after reading this proposed bill. Such a bill is wrong in so many ways... But the libs in NYC are stupid and always will be.
How about a hint in any language as to where this story is taking place. Something in the title is always nice.
No way....most Indian immigrants don't need favors from the diversity crowd. Additionally, India is the largest English-speaking country in the world with approx. 330 million English speakers!! Hard to believe, isn't it?
Agreed...my mistake to have put Hindi on my list. They do not need any help.
No problem.....I wasn't focusing on any mistakes. Just making the point that Indians in the USA have a much better track record of assimilating (with the local population and the local culture) than other Asian/S.American immigrants. Never seen any "Indiatowns" in the US. I think the Indian spirit of assimilation owes a lot to adaptability and respect for the host country's (USA) laws, religion, and customs too.
Well said...excellent point. I met a liberal black democrat the other day in a bar. He told me that "colored people" (his words) should get together to fight against the common "white enemy." I love this country and am thankful for being here. This democrat is so mistaken if he believes that I'll support race warfare or affirmative action. No way on earth will his pipedream come true.
In fact, I believe that the greatest problem facing the black community today is their dependence on their race-baiting leaders and welfare. As Jagdish Bhagwati points out, immigrants from Asia succeed mostly because they have a strong disdain for minority-appeasement policies. That, and a strong work ethic.
That is about 25-30% of their country.
You're absolutely right, moog. English is also becoming the "lingua franca" (pun not intended) and more popular even among the poor and people in the rural areas. The so-called vernacular schools are going out of existence and the only reason many of them exist is because of politicians who whip up linguistic passions whenever it is time for elections.
Shaking my head in disbelief.
Having been involved with immigrants and students in general for a long time I can attest to the fact that they are fully informed as to their children's grades.
It's the native born kids whose parents could care less about their behavior grades etc.
Ghettoizing immigrants by expanding native language services endangers the security and well-being of this nation.
Sounds like our elections:). English has long been that way all over the world. Koreans learned English, though many of them could not speak it at all when I was there. I do know that there are many very good Indian speakers of English, but it is gosh dang hard to understand them on the phone sometimes and they don't always know the vernacular.
