October 8, 2005 -- The City Council Education Committee yesterday paved the way for a new bill requiring the city to translate report cards and other school-related documents into nine languages. The Department of Education already translates many documents into Spanish, Russian and Chinese and is aiming to provide services in six other languages through an expanded translation unit this fall.
But supporters of the bill said the department's efforts do not go far enough.
Councilman Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens), lead sponsor of the bill known as the "Education Equity Act," said the measure attempts "to engage parents who may not be as involved in their children's education as they would like."
The lone opposition on the panel, Andrew Lanza (R-S.I.), called the bill a waste of taxpayer money that sends the message that learning English is not important.

They should also demand publication and dissemination of subway maps in farsi.
HEHEHEHEHE
Make all report cards numerical.
Emphasize legal. Our southern "undocumented immigrants" are nothing more than criminals, IMO.
Actually it goes deeper than that. It seems as though a lot of people want their own little circumstances where they only get THEIR way. Too many people like to blame the other guy, focus on the negative, not take personal responsibility for things, look out for "me" first, go nuts if they don't get their way, and so on and so on. (I should know, I do it all the time:). I don't know where it has come from exactly, but it alarms me.
As in India, as in the entire world.

It's never enough when it comes to supporters of multiculturalism.
Since the translator I use is not available on weekends, this response is posted in English. Please forgive my lack of sensitivity and inclusiveness.
Anthing with Equality or anything like it these days is a bad thing it seems.
As in India, as in the entire world.
In India, only a certain population speaks English, though they do speak it pretty well.
Okay...but isn't there one American student of Vietnamese ancestry that might be a poor student and lie about his/her grades?
SHHHHHHHHHH! That's my secret:)
((Don't worry--your secret's safe with me))
"Anthing with Equality or anything like it these days is a bad thing it seems."
THAT'S WHY I've gotten so bad at math. :)
Oh, maybe one or two :)
((Don't worry--your secret's safe with me))
Oh, thank you. I was afraid it was going to get out. I'm one of the few people out there who is as dumb as he looks, but I try to cover that up.
For "auditorium" events like community meetings and back-to-school nights up to 100 attendees using headphones can hear interpretations in up to six languages, plus sign language and cued speech for the deaf.
Holy cats! That's nuts. I can understand the sign language maybe, but the rest? Egads.
Agreed in toto.
Agreed in toto.
What about Dorothy?
Black America is about to get steam-rolled and their "leaders" are still fighting the last war.
The whole affirmative action, reparations, White America v. Black America "struggle" is history only they don't know it yet. How will they make their case when it is second generation Koreans, Indians, Chinese, Eastern Europeans, etc making the hiring decisions? I doubt some Korean American who watched his parents work 70 hours a week in a dry cleaner so he could go to Penn State is going to feel too much sympathy for the Jesse followers. Nor do I think that he's going to elect politicians who sing that song.
