It's not easy being the master of ceremonies for a roast when half of the roasters don't show up.

Ask political commentator Mark Shields, who found himself in that uncomfortable position Wednesday evening as the Spina Bifida Association attempted to put TV personality Barbara Walters in the "hot seat" at the Hyatt Regency Washington.

"This is more like a bake-off," a visibly embarrassed Mrs. Walters said after the roasting, expressing disappointment that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and fellow roaster Sen. Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana were no-shows.

As it was, the two remaining roasters — Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy Karen Hughes and ABC newsman Sam Donaldson — went easy on Mrs. Walters, while last-second stand-in Mary Matalin, who was in the audience as Mrs. Hughes' guest, tried to read from Mrs. Landrieu's prepared remarks.

It got even worse at the close of the evening when organizers quickly dragged wires and cords on stage, hoping to patch through Mrs. Clinton by telephone, but to no avail. (Mrs. Clinton and Mrs. Landrieu were said to be "detained" by official Senate duties.)

Nevertheless, the annual fundraising event — which had in the audience Washington power couples Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn and Alan Greenspan and Andrea Mitchell — accomplished its goal of raising awareness of the most common permanently disabling birth defect in this country.

Heh. And that doesn't even count the library donation that Clinton put the touch on the Saudis for, after agreeing not to press for interrogation of the Khobar Towers suspects.

While the terrorists were plotting 9/11, Dollar Bill had their back.

Still, someone low on the ladder like Senator Landrieu missing a Woodruff affair will raise eyebrows.

...but I'm not convinced that we should be worried about it one way or the other. I'd hate to think that missing a D.C. party or fundraiser would alter American political power.

It is HUGE indeed. Barbara Walters and DemocRAT apparatchiks Judy Woodruff and Al -unt are very very big in the lefty politics side of the city.

They also have huge egos and will find a way to get even, using the news networks they work for.

The witch of Whitehaven Street made a mistake on this one.

I's just like to add one thing that strikes me funny. When these liberals get wound up about a charity, isn't it usually something that "raises funds" or "raises awareness" about something that affects a member of their immediate family.

It's a safe bet that Judy Woodruff and Al Hunt would not give two figs in a sandstorm for spina bifida if they didn't have a daughter suffering from it.

And I shouldn't wonder that very little gets to anybody who needs actual help as a result of this soirée. It's a chance for people who are very self-serving to masquerade as charitable.

Yep; she has the option to not have it, because the senators have first class protection up there, but she won't give it up; it sets her apart, keep the press at bay, and even other senators won't approach her.
