The Latest Snark (Speaking truth to Daffy Duck conservatives opposed to Harrier Miers)
Irish Pennants ^ | October 7, 2005 | Jack Kelly

The latest snark among conservatives opposed to the Miers nomination has been generated by this paragraph this story in the Washington Post:

In an initial chat with Miers, according to several people with knowledge of the exchange, Leahy asked her to name her favorite Supreme Court justices. Miers responded with "Warren" — which led Leahy to ask her whether she meant former Chief Justice Earl Warren, a liberal icon, or former Chief Justice Warren Burger, a conservative who voted for Roe v. Wade . Miers said she meant Warren Burger, the sources said.

Here's what Polipundit was told happened:

"Miers was asked about Justices she admired. She responded that she admired different Justices for different reasons, including Warren — interrupted by Senator Leahy — Burger for his administrative skills.

Reasonable people could ask whether Burger was a great administrator, but the comment is taken out of context by the Washington Post. Miers didn't express admiration for his jurisprudence."

Burger was not a great intellect, but he was a fine administrator. An example of this is something for which he is often criticized, his vote in support of Rove v. Wade.

Burger understood that there was a majority for this decision, so he voted with the majority so he could assign the opinion. He assigned it to his friend Harry Blackmun, who wrote an opinion so abominably reasoned it is begging to be overturned when there is a majority on the Court with the stones to do so.

If Miers goes down, they'll not likely be anyone willing to go through this process. So, O'Conner will be asked to stay on. If that happens, I hope you Wrist Slashing types will be happy with yourselves. Feel free to Freepmail me if you need to borrow a razor.

If those opposing yet another stealth candidate are Daffy Dukc conservatives, the ones supporting this nomination are Forrest Gump conservatives, stupid enough to go along with a stealth strategy that has produced three liberal justices out of four nominated in the past 25 years.

Conservatives can win because too many are too stupid to support a strategy that will assure victory.

I can definetly see Miers withdrawing from the confirmation process for the good of the Administration.

You are saying a novena that she withdraws, but, with the backing of Bush, she will stay at least through her hearings.

And she deserves that.

"This is really getting ridiculous. Let the woman talk and then judge...this rifling through the garbage is just absurd and unseemly. She's one of us, and we're treating her like dirt."

BEARS REPEATING!

The "trust angle" hasn't worked and now you're into the "nuts and sluts" defense. If the 'Toon had nominated David Kendall for SCOTUS would you be supporting the "fresh" face?

Please give me one example of what the woman has said or done that should disqualify her from the court, and I'll change sides.

It's not a specific instance of what she's said or done that bothers me (though there are examples of liberal tendency's in her past), what bothers me is that she isn't even in the top tier of qualification for the supreme court, she is too old to change the court long-term, and I have no reason to trust the Administration as per her legal philosophy.

Who is stopping nominee Miers from talking? Why hasn't she talked more, instead of being a cipher? It's Bushites who want no discussion.

"I like Luttig, I like Brown, I like Estrada, etc..."

No kidding.

John Warner, Arlen Specter, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Chuck Hagel, George Voinovich, Mike Dewine, Lincoln Chafee, John McCain. Real fighters! You can always count on that crowd.

I realize that you don't get it but this Senate will never confirm your favorites. They've made that abundently clear. One week ago several republican senators said "don't send them up, we don't have the votes." Anybody paying attention back then knows this. But, you die hards are determined to die hard. Thanks but, no thanks. Your intention to destroy the Republican Party leaves me mystified.

Apparently was the lead attorney in the land theft that was used to build a new Texas Rangers statium. Some owners did not want to sell and she and other talked the city of Arlington into taking the land.

"Miers' time on Dallas City Council provides some insight"
Miers was one of 10 Dallas council members to unanimously approve a 1989 agenda item that revised minimum height, weight and vision requirements for Dallas firefighters to facilitate "promotion of certain ranks in the Fire Department," particularly women.

The agenda item's title: "Implementation of Fire Department Affirmative Action Plan."

It is very interesting. Which goes hand in hand with this:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1498109/posts

In the late 1990s, as a member of the advisory board for Southern Methodist University's law school, Ms. Miers pushed for the creation of an endowed lecture series in women's studies named for Louise B. Raggio, one of the first women to rise to prominence in the Texas legal community ...Ms. Miers, whom President Bush announced on Monday as his choice to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, not only advocated for the lecture series, but also gave money and solicited donations to help get it off the ground ... A feminist icon, Gloria Steinem, delivered the series's first lecture, in 1998.

Kennedy sure did get away with nominating Bobby K. for attny. general, and the MSM never mentioned the word 'cronyism', which they're using to beat Bush over the head....along with 'lowest approval numbers ever in the history of the world', etc..

Cite your source for this information. Even if true, Harriet is not the best person for this position.
